Out of curiosity, which U87? Was it an ai version? And after testing, did you drop the files into a mix of any sort? I recently picked up a 1973 U87 with a brand new capsule. I wasn't really in the market for a U87, but the price was about half what they are new and electronically it was in excellent shape. So far I have been much more impressed with it than I initially thought I would. In fact, in my first session with it, my friend and I spent 12 hours writing, practicing, and recording and mixing a little 6 song EP. I used the U87 about 50/50 with a Royer 121 on guitars, and used it for all of the vocal tracks. It added a nice flavor to the guitars, but where it really stood out was on this singers vocals. The chain was U87 to Chandler TG2 preamp to Distressor. I never used any EQ on the way in and never processed the vocals at all (except any processing on the mix bus) and the vocals sound wonderful to me. Of the 6 songs there is one song that I may go back in and de-ess a tiny bit in the chorus lines, but other than that, it's all the original chain. It held it's space in a mix (filled with Marshall/Les Paul guitars) very nicely, but still sounds very natural.
