Mia and My setup

Ok heres the deal.
I have a windows 98 pc.
I have installed a Event Mia sound card(24bit/96k balanced i/o and digital i/o).
A Midiman usb MIDI sport 2x2 MIDI interface.
I am running cool edit pro, and am thinking of buying a new program. Micro logic av, Cubasis or Cakewalk homestudio 2000.
Homestudio has 24/96 capabilitys. Im not sure on Logic av.
What would be a better choice?
Also I am new to Midi sequencing all I realy want to do with it is program my DM-5 Drum modual.
Is it easy? I dont have a controler to sequence with I am saving for a Korg MS2000.
I am planning on doing some upgrades to the pc and may get a card with more inputs.
My big question is though.
When I record into the sound card I am using the balanced out from my Peavy mkIII series twelve chanel board.
into the balenced in on the Mia.
Problem is that I get realy weak tracks. the monitor sounds nice and loud but when I listen back its realy quiet, and not good looking waves on the screen either.
Any remidys for this?

you really cant go by how loud of a sound you are getting from the monitor....your soundcard software or recording software should have meters which show how strong of a signal you are going in with....get as close to 0db without going over.....
 
Buying a sequencer and audio softwear is like buying a suit... very personal fit.

Download the demos of all the products you've mentioned and TRY THEM to see what fits you.... You may like what I hate and hate what I like. All the programs will turn out great music but you have to be willing to work within their limitations and concepts and again that's a personal decision.

Personally I'm using N-Track Studio (www.n-track.com) as a sequencer but be warned I can't get it to work with the ASIO drivers, only MME with higher latency (although that isn't stopping me; working fine for what I'm doing.) I also use a Midiman USB interface, a Mia and an SBLive cards and SoundForge5 for editing.

Do you have the proper settings on the Mia control panel?? You know if you click on the little buttons in the Analog In and Out panels you can switch between the +4 and -10db settings and that changes the volume.
 
Layla seems the same.

I have a layla 24/96 and CW 9.0 I mix recordings in to the red as much as I can and my tracks are always weak as well. normalizing is a must for me. I could just ignore the meters in the layla and cakewalk but I don't think that digital is very forgiving.
 
Only tings I can think of off hand are:

1) you haven't monitored the level of the input on channel meters and have simply gone by your ear.
as the knowledgeable people above have said you must record with as strong a signal as is possible without getting distortion.

2) you arent set up correctly somewhere... the line outs to your monitors/desk arent right somewhere or your software's monitoring isnt set up right. How have you set up your monitors system??? out of the card into a mixer into the monitors???

3) you are recording at too low a bit/ sample rate. you wnat to use 24bit at 44.1. This allows you to burn to CD. 96k is for DVDs which is a little in the future for most of us.
