Hey all you drummer guys..............any advice on the "best" metronome and h/phones for a drummer. Is there drummer specific gear out there or do they use a general purpose unit.

Well I got a Tama Rythym Watch RW100. It's an awesome metrenome. About h/phones i don't know because I don't use any so that is all the advice I can give you

For the most part, if you just want something to go "click, click" a metronome is a metronome. If you want to mix things up a bit the best thing to use is either a Tama Rythym watch or just a drum machine.
The drum machine will allow you to setup whatever pattern you want and also have a variety of sounds at your disposal.
I use Sony MDR7506 headphones. They give you pretty good isolation and high volume/great sound. I'm going to checkout the various "isolation" headphones that are out there right now. They are basically shooter's muffs with speakers inside.
If you want to lump your questions together, there is a product out there called "Metrophones" which is just what it sounds like. Isolation headphones with a built in metronome.
The drum machine will allow you to setup whatever pattern you want and also have a variety of sounds at your disposal.

I haven't tried one yet, but Korg came out with an in ear metronome the metroGnome. Seems like a cool idea, just sticks in one ear, might be annoying after a while though. You could go with any electronic metronome with an earphone out, and do one earphone, and one earplug if you want less sound, or route the whole click through whatever phones you choose.

if you want the best isolation, go with the Shure in ear pieces as headphones.

If you want to go the cheap route, try the Koss "the Plug"
in ear headphones. These are like the Shure and Etymotics
but much cheaper (in price). I find the sound quality acceptable
for monitoring; so for a metronome click, it is more than enough.
Just make sure you get the latest model which is metallic blue with silver rings and has no mute switch. So far, they don't give
me headaches like some more accurate headphones do, and also
have great isolation. They come with four pairs of cushion plugs,
and you can make your own spares(do a google search).
Circuit City sells them for $19.99, and I also saw them for $24.99
at Best Buy, so shop around. For the money, you won't be
disappointed.
Presently I am not using the click, instead, I use
a minimal percussion track panned to one ear.
In the past, I have used a drumKat click output, which was
pretty cool because I could also use Tap Tempo to set it.
But, that BEEP really got to me after a while.
