metronome issues with reaper

I had previously recorded a a few tracks for a song in reaper. In a couple parts, a metronome would help. However, the bpm is default at 120. I need to change the bpms to make the metronome and the song line up. But every time I do, it changes the tempo of the song too. Help!

Unless you have bpm-driven VSTi in the recorded tracks, (like EZ Drummer, for example), it shouldn't make any difference. If the metronome is at 100bpm to match the song, that is what the tempo of the song is.

What mjb says.

What have you recorded so far? Is it audio or midi?

If it is midi, by deault its tempo will change if you change the tempo settings.

If it is audio, it will, by default, be unaffected by a change in tempo.

If you are happy with the tempo up to a certain point, you can insert a tempo change at that point ([shift] C).

So you have some tracks in the project already, but when you change the tempo of the project the tracks are changing too?

Hit alt+enter to bring up the project settings.
Go to the project settings tab
Enter your new BPM
Change "Timebase for items/envelopes/markers" to "time"

This will decouple your previous tracks from the tempo of the project so that changes to the latter won't affect the former.
