Metal tune, just guitars

Hey there, I recorded this a couple of days ago. I'm learning to use ProTools so maybe you'll hear osme minor mistakes here and there (lol, punch in is great, but also tricky)

Well, in theory, a distorted guitar MUST be recorded with a EXPANDER and a COMPRESSOR. These physical devices are available in expensive (and Behringer) rackmount units. I was wonderign if there's a way to achieve the same effect using only ProTools. I tried the expander and compressor plugin available but it doesn't seem to work properly. Stop, I'm no saying the plugin will REPLACE the good old rack, just wanna know if there's a way.

For this tune I used this guitar rig:
Jackson RR3 + Metal Zone MT2 + Direct box + Mbox2 > ProTools

I don't wanna be a dick, but this is a mixing clinic....you've managed to mix a few guitar tracks... and then post a super low bit rate mp3....

It has worked for me, I run the guitar trhu an expander to eliminate some undesirable noises and thru a dbx compressor to punch up the sound (Not too much compression, just the right amount to even the waves)

I tried to do the same with the ProTools plugin but it doesn't work. I Know it's not the same, I just wanna know if it's possible to emulate that.

Is anything wrong with posting a tune...even if it has only three tracks (more than one track=a mix)? I think this is the right place to post, the mixing clinic, duh.

well, since this is the mixing clinic....

you really shouldn't have to compress a distorted guitar, especially heavily distorted guitar, at least not for anything other than to add a little color IMO. your peaks should be pretty even if you are recording through a pedal .

but if you really want to know the truth, compressing/expanding anything unnecessarily will hurt your mix in the long run. just my $.02

The problem with your post is that the low bandwidth mp3 has killed any chance of an honest critique because the track sounds like crap.

Here's a tip, take it how you want it: shorten the length of your post to just one or two measures. And post it in a much higher bandwidth. 128kbps is the very least you should attempt. Any smaller, and the mp3 compression ruins the track.

Also, expanders and compressors are not necessary to get a decent guitar sound. A good mic, a good mic pre amp on a good guitar amp probably is. IME, DI guitars don't sit well in a mix, and no amount of effects racks, plug-ins or what-have-you will fix it. I think you will realize this once you try to add anything else to your tracks.

Thanks for the advice man, the compression of the MP3 is not the best way to hear a "mix". I'll try to post a new sample so you can hear the thing with a better quality. Er... and about the direct injecion... I'm just doing it to test the direct box. I usually record with a SM57 and a tube combo... oh, and thats the second reason: I must raise the volume to 5 to get a decent tube sound. I'll try to record it again later.

Now that sound like a lo fi attempt at rockin' out on Brian May riffs through a cheap amp & pedal, sorry. Probably the MP3's lack of quality.
Mate, put a song together or something that I can comment on as a piece of of composed song with structure, texture etc.
