Wireneck, I remember listening to this before, and not leaving a comment because I had no real input except I like it. Now I feel like I should say, I like it. I have no useful input for you, as it kicks ass, but do you want to say how it was recorded? You know, some of the equipement used, and some micing techniques. I'm just starting to mic my amp, and am always looking for stuff to try. Anyway, killer tune. Just, very metal. Cool.

This thread is getting more attention in now than when I originally posted (go figure LMAO). Thanks for listening guys and being supportive.

Dogman Im still not completely happy with how the production turned out. I've come to realize that me attempting to record and write and perform is really a conflict of interest. Not to mention im probably alot better at guitar/bass than I am at mixing/recording LOL. At any rate here is the basic layout of my setup on this particular stuff.

Everything was tracked through my Soundtracs Solo 24 channel mixer to Alesis Adats. I have two main amps that I use, Mesa boogie Nomad 45 short tube head and a Marshall Bi-chorus 200 head through one of my 3 Marshall 4x12 cabs. In this case I am almost certain that most of the guitars were the nomad through a Marshall 1960a jcm 900 cab with a Shure Sm-57. My main guitar is a vintage 1979 Gibson Les Paul custom. I can list out some more stuff if you have specific questions but I don't want to sound like some know it all trying to dump gear and opinions on you.
 
Thanks, Wireneck. I play my guitars through a POD XTL, then run that into an old Carvin SX-200. I've just started micing with an Sm-58, into an Autio Buddy pre, then into my Delta-44 soundcard. Some sounds a re good, and some are pretty thin. I stick the mic really close to the speaker-maybe 1 inch away. Everything is recorded as to what sounds good coming out of the amp. I seem to have to cut the highs on the guitar after recording, as they get picked up more so than the lows. The amp is thunping pretty good when I do palm-mutes, but those seem to be thin when recorded. After just a bit of eq, they seem better, but not the same as real life sounds. Is this normal, or do you have some suggestions?

Man, that's articulate guitar playing with those staccato 16th/8th note figures in the beginning (and elsewhere). Sets up the whole thing, and the drums there are precise in matching the guitars' 16ths.

The contrast with the sweet/slow middle section is striking. Having the drums keep basically their same sound and level going there holds it together structurally, to my ear (and I love that low level gong or what ever it is towards the end of the section). The high clean/sweet guitar lines during the transition out of the middle section, where it's starting to increase back to the higher intensity level, have a singing quality that's perfect for the phrase. Beautiful natural vibrato on the high notes of the figures there. The intense guitar part leading into the slow section is great - those triplet arpeggios turning into scale figures that really dig in.

An idea that's probably of no use but it hit me so I'll say anyway... transitioning into the slow section might be just a little abrupt, to my ear, and might fit better with an added bar or two of an acoustic gtr transitional passage after the distorted triplets peak out and the ending note sighs (which is a great phrase ending BTW). But it would break out of the 8 bar phrase structure the piece is using throughout, and might be a style-sin for all I know.

It holds up pretty well as an instrumental, i think, there's plenty happening in there, excellent calm stick..... but i like singing. Mixingwise, did you mix up the kick?, i think it needs even louder...

Nice job Wireneck! I listened twice and have two thoughts.
1- What is the clicking/percussive sound around :14 and so on? It freaks me out.
2- Have you experimented with pulling the main gutiar closer together at all. Sounds like there is tons of room between them, almost too much. Not the panning, but the delay.

Anyhow, that is was helluva track!!!! :cool:

dogman Just speaking from personal experience here so take this for what its worth. When it comes to heavy guitars I find that the "hi-pass" is your friend. I often roll guitars off as high as 150Hz , depending on where im playing on the neck and whats going on under it.Alot of the chunk on metal recordings is really coming from the bass. It may seem a little weird if your not listening to everything put together in "the mix" but thats where it really counts anyways right?
Also with a mic like the sm57 or 58 moving it 1/16th of an inch will give you a completely different sound. So if things are a little bright point the mic a little further from the cone.

The clicking percussive thing is the high hats. He plays a 13" set and they have a very unique sound when played closed. Listening back, I prob went a little overboard with the highs on the Overheads. Your comment about the leads and the delay is right on the money. I've thought about killing some of the wetness but I've also promised myself that I wouldn't mess with this song anymore untill I had completed some other task. so far so good, thanks for the listen.

i dont know if you meant for the toms to be so dead, but i absoutely love it.

the drums overall are incredible. bass drum is the weakest, but it's not horrible.

guitars are good, but they could use a bit more high/mid.

i'm not liking the bass much, i always like that miced cab feel with a lot of mid. try running a sans amp and see what you can get.

but hell yeah man, sweet jam!
