can you get an el84 powersection amp to generate a modern metal tone.

Ok though seriously. I'm having a debate with someone and need to know if an el84 based tube amp is capable of achieving a fullout metal tone. I've been informed that the preamp section is much more important. I'd like to if this is true or if it's some kind of combonation. All I know is every crunchy british style amp seems to run on el84 tube while more "metal" type amps I've seen run 6l6's.
 
I have a Mesa combo that's definitely a metal amp that runs on el84's. However, el84 amps tend to be lower wattage, so if by metal amp you mean a huge 100 watt stack then I wouldn't say they'd cut it. Since you said metal tone then I definitely say they can get the tone, Preamp is more important for metal distortion, but its a combination.

I know the el34 the 25 watt tube is a more chimmey or glassy tone than the 6L6. I believe most important is the preamp stage as well. But if the right preamp I would say for sure you could get a modern metal tone. I don't think you will find it in a fender or peavey. I would for sure look at the Orange Amps or maybe some old marshalls. Some of the most nasty guitar tones I ever heard came from a jcm 800.

There are also some killer mods you can do with the jcm 800. Soldano used to make a preamp tube that you could mod the marshall with and make it sound like a flame thrower.
 
The overall circuit design (which includes the preamp since it is a major part) is more important than the tubes used.

Remember, Fender uses lots of 6L6's in amps for their "fender shimmer", and Mesa uses lots of 6L6's for their "modern metal".

Thats all in the design.

I think you can achieve that sound just by "scooping" the mids when you eq. The tube you have makes some difference, but it's mostly knowing where to cut the eq....
 
Thanks guys, I was just arguing with a buddy he claimed it was all about the preamp section, I thought it was more to do with the power section.
 
Another thing to consider is the volume that you'll be playing at - I have to crank my fender deville REALLY to get a good, nasty distortion from the power amp section, but my AC30 distorts nicely at a regular concert volume. Like everyone has said, though, preamp section matters. A lot.

I played an amp a while back at the dallas guitar show a while back that had 2 footswitchable power sections, one 6l6 and one el34. You can find the dude that makes them at http://www.caubleamps.com/ A smoking amp, handmade, and built like a rock. I believe the 100watt head retailed for a little under $3000, if I'm remembering correctly.

although commonly metal guitarists used scooped mids, everything, and I do mean E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G from the guitar, bucker's used, pedals, preamp, power amp, & cab have everything to do with a metal players tone....

You can't boil down tone to an eq setting...
