Metal tapes on 4 track

Would occasional use of a Maxell MX on a Tascam 424 be bad? Would any use be bad?

Check the manual. If it doesn't recommend metal tape, don't use it. It's like sandpaper on the heads...

Back in the80's I put out my first two albums and they were made with some sort of Fostex 4 track cassette. We used metal tapes and I was amazed at how good they sounded.
Since a unit like this is just usually a stepping stone towards better gear I'd probably use metal tapes for the sound - ya they will wear your heads but it might be worth the sound benefit.
