This one's been driving me nuts!

At first it sounded all dark and boxy, so we re-tracked the guitars, replacing the Les Paul with some jangly Fender goodness. Then bass sounded too thin, so I replaced the Fender tracks with an old Gibson EB3. Then it was missing something, so I grabbed the Epiphone FlameKat and Dobro and put down some slide.

I dunno. It's still driving me nuts. Anyone got any suggestions?

The overdriven guitars (I think... I'm bad at identifying things sometimes) that come in at :22 sound like they could use some more lower frequencies in the EQ or something...

Actually, I kind of feel like a lot of the song sounds like it has no lower frequencies except the bass, and it just feels like there is a big hole between the bass and the other stuff. I can't really think of anything to change except the EQ (but I don't know much... I know I keep saying that everywhere, but I want to make sure you are aware that I don't have much experience, so I don't necessarily know what I'm talking about).

Other than that, I think it sounds good in everything. Composition and musicianship are all good.

Yeah the distorted guitars sound like static, I think they're supposed to be in-your-face wall of distortion? Radical changes in eq-ing are needed for that. Kick is too shiny, and if it has reverb on it I'd take that off. Seriously, it's not really possible to say anything else about the loud parts because once you get those guitars where they need to be everything else will change as well. The verses sound ok - bass, guitar, voice. The drums are a bit too far off there. Get cracking on those guitars.

How are you recording the distorted guitar? DI? It's got a horrendous staticy distortion that sounds like a swarm of wasps outside the window. You could bring the vocals up with some compression and makeup gain. The tune itself is pretty good
