yeah, crates aren't my favorite but on one occasion i heard it put out a great distortion sound. i was pretty shocked to see a crate amp doing that. i think it might have been a newer model but i don't know. i don't keep up on the crate line.
if you're looking for a good amp, try looking into mesa. like everything else it depends on what you want to play but mesa has a pretty diverse line of products and i think it's worth your time to check it out.
