matt,

loved your comment... i was recovering from a hang over (i'm definately NOT used to red wine...) so my reply was a bit "vague"... but i do think this problem would occur in the poweramp section instead of thepreamp... however, as yet this ais only a rumour (from a respectable engineer, but neverthel;ess a rumour...)

At 9:36 AM on a Wednesday morining?

At least that's what it is here in the States. It's probably about time to start tipping them back over there. Have one for me. It will be a few hours before I can join ya.

i'm in europe, so yes it's a bit later... however, it's never to early to stop being sober don't ya think?:D

MESA amps sound great but their day is about to come I think. Far, far too many bands are using them right now (like walls of Marshalls in the 80s) and bands looking for a new sound are going to shy away from them and lesser known beautique brands I think. MESA's sound is being copied by amp modelling brands all the time and it gets better and better. They are way overpriced too, especially outside the States where you pay funny money to get one.

Kind of like how nobody plays through Marshall or Fenders any more?

hehehe and gibson? who the fuck plays gibsons?

mesa has however become a victim to the nu-metal craze... buying a rectifier isn't much fun anymore...

If you want to sound like the Deftones or Tool (I will disregard the Korn comment next to those bands) buy a Line 6 Spider 2x12, this is exactly what Stephen (Deftones) has been using for 2 years live, and he plays them through (gasp) Marshal cabs...

(Oh and Adam Jones of Tool uses Marshal's and Deisel's live if you were wondering)

Bullshit!

last time i saw 'm live he was using a jmp-1 with two 2x100 watt marshall powerstages and ofcourse some obscure rack stuff... Like the dude is gonna use some low-budget combo ... sure...

and tool uses a marshall modded bassman rectifier and Diezel...

Well, last time I saw Stephen playing live I was very, very close. He wasn´t playing with the deftones and the place was tinny, the stage was so close and so small that I had my arms resting on it... no kiddin´ :)

He had the following
- jmp-1
- pod pro
- mp-1
- something from rocktron
- one of those marshall´s power amps... 9200 I guess... thru marshall cabs...

And no, he doesn´t use a Spider 2x12 live (was this a joke? :))

HERE'S YOUR ANSWER

You all may hate me for it, but it is the truth.

I personally own a triple rectifier with a 4x12 loaded with custom 90's.

It is awesome I admit, but I paid $4000 for it in Alberta, Canada. Pricey little bastard it was.

For close to the same tone/power/and a dirt cheap price, buy a.....

PEAVEY 5150 II

It is like 120watts, all tube, individual channel tone shaping and yeah.

It is incredibly cheap. I have always hated peavey shit, until I heard a friend of mine's band play for the first time live. It blew me away.....so good. Definately your best best for your buck.
