Thanks! How is mix balance screwed up? I'm gonna change some of the drums, so I'm going back in anyway. I think the final squash is a bit much, so I'm gonna try some limiting of the stems and much less on the whole mix. But what are you hearing?

Well, the snare is buried and inaudible 75% of the time. Hats too loud. Rhythms way too loud. Lead lines too low. Kick too woofy - not enough low end punch or attack. Is that a kick pedal squeaking I hear in the very first bit of the intro? Lots of low-mid/midrange muck clouding everything up. On the plus side - it's well performed and the arrangement is interesting enough to not lose interest.

Damn, I was afraid you'd say that. The drums are pre-mixed loops. Though I do have samples of each piece, so I could augment the snare and kick. I agree about the rhythm and lead volumes--I'm a bit timid about my lead playing and don't want it to dominate sometimes. Kinda like a shy singer wanting the vox down, I guess.
But hey, I think these things are mostly fixable, so I appreciate the input!

You might not need to augment anything, just balance the mix better. The kick and snare might sound fine once you stop the other things from stomping all over them.

Dayum! I went out of town for a few days, and when I came back I gave this a fresh listen. Gawd, what a muddy mess! (You were right, Greg!)
It's actually for a paying project--it's gonna be a backing track to a Christmas video I'm doing for a corporate client. As such, the timing is critical--and this was too long. So I cut out the improv/solo pass (number 3, I think) and retracked all the leads to add a bit more flourish. While I was in there, I tweaked about 11 bazillion different things.
Here's my Christmas wish list for this little tune:
1) Guitars much less wet
2) Rhythm and lead more in balance (rhythms down, leads up)
3) Bottom end tighter
4) Drums punchier (kick and snare no longer buried)
5) Lower-mid mud gone (or at least greatly decreased)
How am I doing on my wish list?

Yeah that's way better. Way better. The kick is still kind of woofy, but it's okay. I'd look to clean out the low mids on the kick if it were mine. That will tighten it up more. But it's certainly not terrible as-is. The rest sound much improved.
