good thread

damn this is a long thread, keep it going and it might reach 1000 :D ,help me get a good thread going :D as for mics, ive used a few, as for the ones i own :( there not even worth mentioning

Only two... so far.
A troublesome mxl990: ok when it worked, but it (or possibly the mixer's phantom power) has a fault and makes wind noises and cuts out. Porbably a mistake...
And a very trusty AKGD3700- "triangular' dynamic, nice treble sounds, a little weak in the mids I'm told; hopeless for anything but pretty close-up vocals.
What I want is... a rode nt1.

My mic list is on the studio G brooklyn website below.

I have been freelance for so long, that now that I have my own room I seem to have all the weird ones and none of the "normal" ones like 414's or a U87.... Feel free to check it out....

Joel, I think it's precisely because you've freelanced for so long. You expect the studios you work in to have the usual mics, so you build up a collection of personal mics that you won't find in most studios. And at your level of professionalism, you have enough great mics to get the sound you want without the need for the "normal" mics. Great web site, BTW.

I can't remember if I posted before, so here goes:

AKG 414-XLII x2
AKG D112

Senn 441 x2
Senn 421 x4
Senn e609
Senn e602

EV RE20
EV ND868
EV Co7 x4
EV Co9

Shure SM-7B
Shure SM-57 x2

Beyer M201
Yamaha Sub kick
SP B1 x2
Behringer ECM8000 x2

It seemed like more till I wrote it all out. Any obvious gaps I need to fill? I figure I need a better selection of vocal/acoustic mics. My room isn't nice enough to get a figure 8 ribbon.

Right on, Harvey. I know it is true, just feels very "left of center" when someone is like: "lets just put up a U87" and I am like: " how about an RFT 7151 or a TLM170 gotham that is chrome and is #45 of only 100 ever made by neumann?"

Awesome mics, but obscure to say the least.... I love them, they are part of my personal way of working, which should be your only goal IMHO. Unless you own a "public" full function studio, where your primary goal is to cater to engineers that expect certain things. If you have your own private room: put whatever makes you happy in it!

(has worked with Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Sparklehorse, Unsane, Frank Black.....etc....)

i never fail to be suprised by the people that will show up here.

dam.

i would love it one day if one of you guys could explain to me how to suck less. :D

Okay, I'm gonna tell you the secret:

1. Learn the equipment until you know it in your sleep, and you know (with about 80% accuracy) what a given mic will sound like on almost any source, beforehand.

2. 90% of the time, mic placement is more important than mic selection.

That's it - the rest is production.
