megaphone effect

anyone know the iggy pop song "the passenger" where the vocals kind of sound like they're coming from a megaphone?

how do you think i could get that effect. a lot of chorus?
 
EQ. In fact, there could be a setting for it in one of your EQ plugs. Take out the lows and highs. Should get you close.
 
it doesnt exactly sound like its coming from a megaphone. that was the best way i had to describe it. listen to the song.

Myriad is right, often times such effects are achieved by restricting the vocals to a narrow frequency range with EQ. If you've got a link I'll check out the song. I don't have any Iggy Pop handy. :D
 
EQ and distortion. I would start with a bell curve on the EQ. You might already have a preset, something similar to a telephone - A low cut, a high cut, then boost the mids.

Then add distortion, like something you would use on a heavily distorted guitar track. A stomp box like the Fuzz face. You could even start with Overdrive, if you'd like.

Then a very short delay - somewhere between 50-70ms. Keep the repeats or feedback near zero and blend it to sound like it's reflecting off buildings on a city street.

We used a similar effect on the vocals for "Fall Apart"

I think that's close to what you're looking for - I used all free plugs for that -- season to your own taste.
 
When I wanna use that effect I use a megaphone. If you don't want the full on megaphone effect then blend the track with a dry vocal take.
 
I just found this song on Amazon. Actually it sounds like there is just some slapback echo on there or something like that.

what they said..exept add a distortion effect as well.. megaphones are very distorted.
 
A good megaphone isnt distorted. It just has a limited bandwidth optimised for efficient transmission of speech.
