me and my friends recording guns and roses cover songs , we got a distressor a cheap mic pre rode ntk some dynam9ics , what kind of mic pre could get more of the sound of there vocals. almost that 80's styles vocals , Neve? api? would hte distressor work? my friends got a voice so similuar to his. great river?

To get the right sound you will really need an original Telefunken 251, not a reissue. The magic is in the original. Also, you should go out and get 2 Manley's. You need to link the output of a Manley Voxbox to a Fairchild 670 compressor, and from there back into the preamp of the Manley SLAM.

And buy a hummer to drive it around in

Hummers are too loud though. You will also have to get a huge iso rack to keep the H2 noise down so you can still get that good vocal sound

I use my hummer for heavy compression to get that "squashed" sound
