Hi, this is my first post and I aplolgize if it's a little long
winded. Here's my situation:
I've had my MD8 now for almost two years and I love
it. About 6-7 months ago I had finished doing a bunch
of songs that I was going to put on some CDRs to give
out to people. I brought the unit to a family member's
house to use her computer to mix down on to and then
burn the CDs. I didn't get completely done and I asked
if I could leave the MD8 at her house and she said yes.
I left it on a table that noone ever used. I got really sidetracked
with school and work and didn't get back over there to
finish for about a month. I got there and was about to
get to work when I noticed a sticky substance on my
recorder. It turned out that one of her 15 year old twin
sons had set a glass of orange juice on this table and
it got spilled. Noone bothered to clean it up and it got sticky.
I realize it was stupid for me to leave it there at all, but
I just wasn't thinking I guess. So, after cleaning up the
outside as much as I could, I turned it on and put in a disc...
then I get "Error 07" and no functions work. I couldn't get
mad at anyone but myself because ultimately it was my fault.
I kept trying and eventually got it to work and used it for awhile,
but sometimes still would get error messages. Error 3 after it had been running a little while but it would always work again
if I shut it off for a bit. Now, however I've laid down 4 new songs
and was preparing to mix down to the computer but every time I put a disc in I get "Error 7". And I've tried lot's of times now.
My questions are:
Is there anywhere that lists what the error messages are?
I know they're not in the owner's manual
Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?
Is it going to be worth trying to get it fixed, or should I just
get rid of it and move on? (I really like it the unit, when it works)
Anything? Anybody? Help! Please... I am lost...
I really appreciate any insights anyone can offer me.... thank you
very much and I'm sorry that I told the whole story, but I thought it might help

You may find the meaning of the error messages on Yamaha's web site, but ORANGE JUICE?????!!!!!!!!!
Chances are, it's trashed. Sending it to Yamaha for repair may work, but I doubt it. There's so much circuitry in the thing that could be affected. Find out if your relative's home owner's insurance covers electronic equipment - maybe that's an option.
What a nightmare!
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply,
I just thought that maybe since it
had worked for awhile afterwards
that maybe it was something that could
be fixed, I just don't know.

You may as well keep using it until it dies- just make sure you back up all your files!

Yo AW-Man-AW why did you do it?

Leaving your gear open to attack by non-recording gremlins is not wise.

I would say that you should forget about repair -- start thinking about replacing.

Over the years in my studio, when a button falls off a recorder, and I check and find out that repair for a two cent piece of plastic will run 100 dollars, well, man, I buy a new piece of gear.

Checking the home insurance might get you something.

But, if you have to replace, think about the brand new Yamaha
AW2816 digital box -- it has 16 tracks, 24 bit sound, 32 bit DSP, and burns directly to CD -- all in one unit. I just ordered mine.

So, when it gets here, my Yamaha MD 8 will be done. It will go to my basement storage area and collect dust.

I guess you will not have a penchant for orange juice ever!

Yeah, I know, I'm an idiot...
I admit it... stupid thing to do....

Ive had disk errors before, some were recoverable some were not. Most of the time is was because
I let it run too long without proper cooling, hense the laser accuracy in finding data gets scrambled, when it cools down it usually works fine. But I have had disk errors where the media was bad right off.
I would contact Yamaha and ask their techies what to do, if it doesn't do the job they should fix it or recall it. Let me know what ya find out from Yamaha, maybe a discounted upgrade to the Awe4416 or the Awe2816 would be in order since no one really supports the minidisks unless you mail order...

Peace,
Dennis

Hey Hornet.
What do you want for that MD 8 that will be collecting dust? My buddies got one that's starting to go bad as he smokes 3 packs of cigs a day right next to it, starting to get crackling noises when you turn knobs ect. I warned him about this when he first got it, but he didn't listen to me. All you other MD8 owners take heed, cover it up if your smoking anywhere near it or I guarantee it will eventually be ruined.

awe-man. If I remember right, his manuel did list error messages in the back. this one kept freezing up, forget what error code it said, but disc wouldn't eject, had to slide off the disc holder cartridge to get the disc out.

Good advice on the smoking, articulate one. As for your buddie's crackling knobs, tell him to turn each knob back and forth 100 times. Do Not use contact cleaner - just friction. Got this potentiometer tip from an old electronics tech. It works.

My MD-8 just had beer spilt on tracks 6, 7, and 8. While plugged in. While recording.

Turned it off immediately afterwards; works fine now.

Perhaps with ORANGE JUICE (*slaps forehead*) the acidity could do some damage, but I doubt it. If you haven't permanently shorted something by now, then it may just be a matter of cleaning out the sticky stuff. Roel (from here) suggests PCB cleaner (contact cleaner?), and as long as you remember how to put it back together, I can't see anything wrong with getting in your machine and "alcoholizing" it. You know, rubbing alcohol, maybe with the assistance of a fine SOFT-HAIRED toothbrush. You may need to do this a couple of times to get it clean.

The laser system should be left to licensed techs due to the precision calibration of that system. Everything else seems like fair game.

If you had a MD with orange juice on it, toss it. If you HAVE to have it back, look up "Data Recovery" in the yellow pages. They'll know how to get it back in working order (or how to transfer it to another MD-8, hopefully). I did this once with a cassette tape I spilled yet another beer on about ten years ago, with good results (the recovery, not the spill result).

BTW, did you notice right after the spill that the friggin' POT WELLS are CONCAVE? That's just ASKING for spilled stuff to get into the inside. Wish they would consider these details; shit happens. I didn't have a rag handy (I ended up using my shirt), but I watched for about 10-15 seconds as more and more liquid got FUNNELED into the MD-8 because of that design. I think I grinded half of the enamel off my teeth in that short period...

:o See? :D
