MD8 Direct Track Outs???

They are RCA form. In what case would I use these? And what would I plug them into? I can use my compressor with the TRS on ch.1 and 2 right? What if I have a vocal on track/channel 4 and want to use my compressor on it, can I use the track direct out into my compressor, or do I need to run from the direct out, into a pre-amp, and then into my compressor?

Typically direct outs were designed to feed an external recorder or another mixer. On larger format consoles Ive used the inserts like the MD8 channels 1&2. Ive used the direct outs before on other mixers to feed a external device and brought the signal back into the mixer on the same input of the same channel, I see no reason why that wouldn't work, in fact this week end I was going to try doubling a guitar part using the direct out of one channel to feed a delay unit and bring the delayed signal back into the mixer on another track. I hope to get around to it. Maybe some other folks have done it that way too.
