Would i be able to get decent quality with say a 100-150 dollar mini disc recorder and one of those sony stereo mics, if i was trying to record drums, or a small group of musicians?

i'm of course not looking for pristine sound here, really i'd like the 1950s blue note jazz sound.

anyone have any thoughts on this? i've never used a minidisc recorder before, so i'm completely in the dark here...

There was a post here at HR.COM, a little while back.

Just type in minidisc in the search box. ;)

You might want to get 2 condensors rather than the sony stereo mic....

Just a thought...

You're not going to get super great quality. The little portable MD recorders are great for a lot of applications, but I wouldn't recommend one for trying to make an "actual" recording.

If you are going to use one for "real" recording, then you'll at least want to get a little preamp, because the mic input on the recorder is going to be really noisy....like tape noisy. They make little portable preamps for just this purpose. http://www.minidisco.com/minispecs/sppreamp.html

I have a Sharp SR-60 MD recorder ($80-100) and a Sony ECM-MS907 ($80) stereo electret microphone. I use it for all sorts of little things like recording ideas and making samples, and the realism (aside from the noisy pre) is almost freaky at times. I wouldn't, however, use it as my main recording tool. It just doesn't have the depth required to make a really nice musical recording.

Anyhow, to sum up...if you're just wanting to record practice sessions for your band or something, it's a GREAT solution. The quality will be more than adequate, the setup time is virtually nil, and you can carry it around in your pocket. If you're looking to make a nice recording of your band for a demo or something, you might want to look into better alternatives.
