i got a couple mc012's from GC for $199 (for the pair -- seems like a good deal!),; they didn't have the shockmounts in stock, and i'm worried that for drum overheads i'm going to need them.

anyone have any brilliant "homemade mc012 shockmount" ideas for me? i don't have time to mailorder some before i need to use them...

thanks!

lilcapn,

The above reference looks like a good deal as the the MC-012s mounts list for $49 ea but I did some from the local GC 2 for $25 or $30. Plus the above mounts seem very versitle.

That being said it sounds like mail order may take longer than you can wait to put them to use.

While I have not tried this yet I do remember someone here recomending that in a pinch you can try to isolate the mic stand itself and tape the cable to the stand in strategic areas.

Try placing a folded towel or other vibration absorbant but suportive material under the stand or base plate.

Probably not as effective as the real deal but better than nothing .... just make sure your mic stand is still stable so you don't crash your mics into the floor etc.

I've never used shockmounts (as I don't own them) on my MC012's, which are primarily used as drum overheads. I'm using those heavy triangular based Atlas stands on a carpeted floor, though, so maybe that's why I never noticed a need for shockmounts.

I designed some shockmounts for my mxl603s and my ECM8000s

You will need an ABS coupling (for gluing drain pipes together) at the 1 1/2 " size , get that at the home depot for $.25 each. then go to your arts and crafts store and get some elastic bead cord, for making bracelets, I use the biggest I can get.

First you take the coupling and drill holes at both ends so the cord can go through them and be parellel with one another. tie the cord just a little tight but not too tight. when you are done take a mic clamp and clamp it on the side and for about $.35 you have a functional shokmount for SDC mics

Friend dont let friends buy shockmounts for 50 bucks that they can make for under a buck. But If you insist on buying them for 50 PM me and we can produce you some right now.:D

Operators are standing by.

Good Post Darrin,

I was considering doing something similiar until I found a reasonable deal....could you post another pic of the finished product?

The finished product pic was too dark for me to see any detail but I do appreciate you taking your time to share in your clever ingenuity.

I got the idea from watching the Martha Stewart Living episode on shockmounts.:D

Sorry, I had neither the time or the inclination to build shockmounts. I'm using the Sabrasom units sold at The Sound Room, which are similar in concept to the ones Philboy posted up. I have found them durable and versatile. Littledog, I'm amazed you don't use shock mounts on drum overheads. Try it, and see if it doesn't change the sound, due to attenuation of low frequency vibration from kick drum to mic stand. Maybe you just like the beat...Richie

They only took two minutes to make. You are right along with the Bass drum the ecm8000s have alot more self noise without a shockmount.

homemade mounts

hey darrin --

thanks for the pics!

maybe i'm misjudging the size of the shockmounts you made, but are the elastics really close enough together to hold the mic securely? i'd worry about it dropping out.

wait, do you cross them over? that makes sense.

thanks!

Darrin,

Thanks for the better pic! Very nice work.

I was thinkning of using wooden napkin rings because I could easily screw some type of accessory onto it to mount it to the stand.

Your idea was much more simple and the black ring you used looks much better than the white tubing with pink ink on it I usually see in the plumbing section at Home Depot.

Good Work!

RE: Martha Stewart I am looking forward to her new show MARTHA STEWART - LIVING....IN PRISON.

Today I will show you how to make a shiv from a tooth brush a a chunk of concrete..and later we will look into making your cell more festive for the holidays.:D

And We will bake a cake with a file in it, and you can send your samples to me and the winner gets a $50 gift certificate to Kmart.:D

I use the Tensionmount. At that price it's not worth my time to make one, and they're very cool.

Mean thought for the day - Martha Stewart singing (in her orange jumpsuit) Aerosmith "you aint seen nuthin till your down on a muffin", or Jefferson Airplane "I got a taste of the real world when I went down on you". Sorry, but that womans nose has been so high in the air for so long, it's just amusing to think of it in not so high places.
Bad me, RD

got the stuff

hey darrin --

got my supplies; that was easy.

one question when drilling the holes, it's hard to see in the pic:

there are 4 holes on either side of the ring, correct? how far apart?

thanks again!
