Hi,

I'm pretty new to the digital arena, and am a much better musician than a sound engineer. I am switching to Digital and want the quality of the sound to be as professional as possible, within a set budget. I am leaning towards an Mbox Pro, which comes with pro tools LE, and would be buying a new PC to go with it.
Is this a decent move? I personally have no idea. Can someone with experience tell me or steer me in the right direction if it is not.

Thanks!

what are your recording needs?

how many inputs, software requirements, budget concerns?

My recording needs vary. Most of the time it will be just me doing a lot of dubbing, no more than 2 inputs. When I record I may play guitar or keys, but I usually dub vocals in. There may be times when I want to record a whole band though. My thought was on those occasions mixing out of my board into the MBox, and just save solos and vocals for the dub. Then eventually (if it looks like I'll need more inputs on a regular basis) looking for a digital board. If I go with the mbox pro and get a new PC to go with it, I will probably spend around 3K,,,and that's basically my budget. From there I hope to get more gear a little bit at a time.

The Mbox 2 or the Mbox 2 Pro would work for that then. Then you could step it up later and get a nice preamp or A/D converter to use with the S/PDIF inputs.

Coupled with a decent computer you could still have enough for a nice microphone, monitors or a preamp.
I don't think there's really any negative move to do this...although some anti-Pro Tools people may chime in here and suggest other ways to go. But the Mbox will be a good starter package for you.
