I'm COMPLETELY new, so this might be frustrating for you old and experienced folks. Here's what I think I understand.

I'm 18. I want to record music in college with a laptop that I'll buy later, it seems like 1 GB RAM is the minimum, and 2 GB is recommended. I want it to be somewhat portable. There are lots of recording programs, but Pro Tools is considered by some to be the standard. If I get Pro Tools, I need a compatible interface. The cheapest would be the Mbox 2 Mini, but that doesn't record in stereo. The Mbox 2 fits, has preamps, phantom power, and two mic inputs. Someone said Pro Tools isn't that good with MIDI. What's up with that? Is the Fast Track Ultra better than the Mbox 2? Is pro tools LE much better than pro tools m powered?

Then I need mics. I would probably spend $100 on a matching pair of pretty versatile mics. I can get a couple of these and mounts for $100. It is my understanding that those are good enough to tape acoustic stuff and vocals. http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=1664&brandID=2

Is stereo recording important? Is it worth buying two $50 mics instead of a nicer $100 one just to record two tracks at once?

Later I could look for a nicer one maybe. What mic is most useful to buy after some stereo condenser ones? Maybe a dynamic one, since that's the other kind. I have no idea.

Do I need monitors? How important are those? Can I spend a low amount on them, since they don't affect recorded material? Do I need pro tools compatible monitors?

Thanks for your patience. I'm really sorry if I didn't search for all of those, but I'm not because it might just be easier this way.

The answers would outnumber the members on this board. My personal opinion is don't necessarily assume you need Pro Tools. There are lots of good Daw software out there.

Take a couple of hours and read the Tweek guide

Welcome to the bottomless pit of home recording!
