I need some advice from you more computer geeky than me types. (i'm pretty geeky myself)

(deep breath) ... I am running PA8 on an intel P4 1.5 ghz with 512ram & 60GB hard drive.(win 98 SE) I set up the system about a year ago, and it ran flawlessly for about 6 months. then I started getting pops and clicks in my audio just about every other time I would track something. Very unpredictable. Well, I think I fixed THAT.
Recently I found that my hard drive was not set to DMA and changed that. The pops and clicks went away, although I don't know how I was able to work for so long without DMA turned on.
also, when I first changed this, I think I was able to play my the song for a lot longer without it stopping.
I also changed a setting on my hard drive controller from single to dual ide Channels (or something!) thinking that dual MUST BE faster than single! Was this bad? Now I can't play a song with more than a few audio tracks for more than about five seconds before it stops playback.
I changed a few other things as well that I can't remember off the top of my head. The computer is at home, not here with me.

anyway, I'm rambling on now. Any ideas?

anyone . . .

anyone. . .

anyone?

what i would do is the same thing i do when anything acts up on my computer. i would run the defrag utility, the scan disk to check for errors, i would also delete cookies, temporary internet files, and temporary files, then i would run my virus scan, do windows updates, and the maybe even run Ad-Aware...available at www.lavasoftusa.com download Ad-Aware and the Refupdate program. When that is done, run the refupdate and get the updated reference files...then run the program. Have it check the whole computer. Delete everything it suggests. If you are running KaZaa it may not run corrrectly afterwards, if so, i suggest KaZaa lite.

Any questions just private message me.

put it back in single if that worked better.

how many buffers are you using for playback?

where is your latency slider set for playback?

are you using Standard PC or ACPI configuration?

if you are using ACPI is your soundcard sharing IR/Q with any other device?

Everything is working great now! :D

Thanks for the help everyone.
It sure feels good to have everything working the way it's supposed to now. I have been able to record without pops and clicks in the audio now, running 20+ tracks without it stopping or stuttering! Now my computer is more than an $800 paperweight!

I set the IDE controller to default, instead of dual channels. that helped right away.
Crosstudio, I also set the playback buffers to 12 as was reccomended by cakewalks site.

Also, there is no Internet on this system. I decided from the beggining that I would keep this computer seperate from my Internet stuff.
