On my TSR8 deck can i run my line outs straight to a mixer to monitor and then run my good mic pre directy to the rca inputs to the TSR8 one at a time to record? I dont plan on recording anything more than one track at a time with this next project.

If i could do this would there be any advantage to this method other than keeping things simple? would it sound better?

thanks

Yes you can. Although if I remember back to my TSR-8 days I don't recall it having individual input channel attenuation adjustment on the machine like the earlier Tascam 8 trackers so you'd have to control all your TSR-8 input levels from the mic pre.

Sound quality wise it'd depend on the pre but doing what you're proposing removes one piece of kit from the audio chain if you normally go mic pre->desk->TSR-8 so that's got to be better.
