My new Maxtor 200GB 16MB cache hard drive makes a loud crackling sound when accessing data on the drive. The Powermax software did not detect any problems. Is it normal to hear that sound?

crackling? that sounds pretty harsh. hard drives do make noise and some more than others but i've never heard one crackle.

What type of Maxtor drive is it? I have the Maxtor OneTouch 2 drive which makes very little noise.

Crackling doesn't sound healthy though.. how long have you had it? Maybe a warranty claim?

I agree with these 2 guys...drives are generally pretty quiet anymore. I only hear coolong fan noise here, and I have 2 Maxtor's in my pc. Very little HD noise. Might want to see if you can get it replaced.

The diagnostic software says there is something wrong with the drive.
Newegg.com (Where I bought it from) says I have to pay shipping to get a replacement!!!

Why the fuck do I need to pay shipping twice for a defective HD they sold me???
Do you guys know if dealing with Maxtor directly is easier?

Don't know for sure, but contact them and see what they say. How long ago did you purchase it? Go to newegg nad see what their policy is. Let them know you are unhappy, and see if they change tunes. They may not, but tell them you will buy elsewhere if they are doing this to you.

Yeah, i know for one, over here in the Uk if something goes wrong you have to pay for the shipping to send it back.. I remember purchasing some M Audio monitors and they went wrong so i spent £30 sending them back, they returned them to me 3 months later still faulty.. so i sent them back again at £30, and then said they werent covered under warranty.. I ended up getting some new shiny monitors but after a hell of alot of phone calls, emails, letters.

Not that you should worry.. Just take Dogman's advice and give them a call saying your unhappy that you have to pay for the postage costs. If they dont change their tune, i would just accept it and get a new hard drive. Shit happens :(

NewEgg is usually pretty reasonable about returns. Don't get shitty with them. Just calmly explain that it isn't your fault they sent you a faulty product and you feel it is unfair for them to charge you twice for shipping. I know for sure they will at least pay for the return shipping.

contact them newegg but be nice cause remember they don’t have to help you out if your being a jerk they will just tell to read the terms of return. but if your nice the one that takes your call may go beyond that agreement and send you the drive along with a prepaid label. Here’s another thing. if you by something from newegg and its DOA and you decide you don’t want it and want a refund you will have to pay a restocking fee.15% Even if it never worked to begin with. I don’t understand that fee.
