A number of times in different threads, such as the recent thread in which I ask some questions about Phase, other members frequently need to know information about my room setup in order to better help me.

So - instead of trying to explain the layout, I threw together a quick diagram and a few photo's.

If you reading this - would you please take a quick look, and see if there is something I could be doing to better treat the room acoustically?

Thanks in advance.

For one thing clean everything up! You got a lot of junk maybe consider throwing it in the garage or somewhere else or better yet a garage sale maybe. I dont think ill be of much help with anything else.

those are free diffusers:D:D:D

It does look kind of junky - but what is it that makes it look that way?

I'm pretty sure I need everything that's is down there.

off with the posters and finish the wall

...then paint it..
it will seem much much cleaner:)

Yeah I agree - the posters look trashy, and don't add any atmosphere.

Get the posters laminated - that way they'll sit flush & give a more even reflection of light so you snaps will be snappier.
You have to have posters! maybe we need a new thread - What posters do you have in your studio?
Otherwise keep going steady as you can.

Photo "A" hang a tapestry over the opening to the door opening to cover those 3 crates of gear you need. move the guitars to above the mix desk in photo "B"(taking down all the posters).

photo "B" has another crate (just left of the mix desk) that can go out in the hall with the others. and i see a lot of wires under that crate that can be hidden by a cheap homemade box.

photo "C" run that overhead wire over the tiles instead of draping it under. and put a table cloth over the night stand covering up seldom used record crate (use a color that matches the color of the wall.)

photo "D" lots of boxes on the far right table and under the chairs(and on them)

photo "e" huge mess of cables on the lower right side needs hidden

photo "c" one more tapestry to cover the raw stud wall

and were is the lava lamp?????:p:p:p

just my 2 cents on making it look spiffy..

Yeah - alot of those a really good suggestions, thanks.

Does anybody know where you buy shipping blankets, or tapestry's ?

Could you elaborate a little more on the homemade box to hide the cables ?

dont take my advice...i was just tryn to make it look pretty..ebay is a good place to shop;)..any record shop or head shop will have taps...

Yeah your right - I could get a pretty Sweet Led Zeppelin tapestry.

I knew my studio looked a little junky, especially compared to pics of other peoples, but couldn't quite put my finger on it. But yeah, your we're quite easily able to pick out several great starting points, and I appreciate that.

I only have so much room, to work with, so some of that junk does have to stay there.

If you notice in photo G where I've got the dry wall down - the guy we bought the house from screwed us over. (He finished over the basement walls so we couldn't see what had really been going on). My wife and I are first time home owners, and we're horrified to find out that wall leaks. So yeah - I have the whole "leaky basement" thing I have to deal with sometimes, although I've fixed 90% of the problem by tar-ing the outside wall.

Dont go downgrading yourself dude.....you got a decent set up:cool:. Belive it or not many newb in here are drooling over your gear(some people are saving for their first guitar;))
it isnt about having the best.... its doing the best with what you have.... Thats what home recording is all about;). just have fun and dont get caught up in the b.s.

p.s. your studio looks down right clean compaired to mine right now....i kid you not:D:D

p.s... p.s.....a Sweet Led Zeppelin tapestry would look kick ass in your room. good choice

Yeah - your right.

Thanks again for all the help.

If I did get a heavy shipping blanket or tapestry, I've always wondered, how do people hang them, without wrecking them ?

My brother made a quick little demo video which has a few shots of my studio - as well as some clips from some of the bands I record.

The song was literally a rough demo that was never supposed to go anywhere, it's not even mixed, but my brother put it on anyway.

Here's the YouTube link.

Hi Matt,

Don't think of any of this as me giving you a hard time - this is just what **I** would do if it were my room. It's just constructive criticism. Not ragging ya! :p

I think they are around $20 each

You can get real packing blankets at http://www.markertek.com

But that isn't the route I would go.

Personally, here is what I would do:

#1. Take everything out of there - I mean completely empty it.

#2. Get some sheetrock and cover up the open studs.

#3. Paint the room.

I'll let you in on a secret - the top of the line paint at Walmart is Sherwin Williams top of the line paint -Buy it as Sherwin Williams and it's about $30 a gallon, buy it at Walmart as their brand and it is under $15 a gallon - same paint, different label. Wally world is Sherwin Williams biggest customer. (My bass player is a painting contractor, that is how I found that out.)

;)

Make a weekend of it, and make some of your friends help you. If they are recording there, they benefit from the room, so make them help!

Then, once you have the room fixed up and painted. Look at the layout. of the gear in the room - what set up would work best for the band to play in and to record in. personally, I think drums in a corner is a nightmare. I'd put the drumkit front and center, and set it up just like a stage.

Or, after you cover up that closet, put the drumkit in front of the closet facing straight out. - that way the drummer has at least 3' behind him - this trick helps make the drums not sound so "boxy" in recordings. Drums need to be AWAY from the walls.

I'd hang the guitars on the wall in the room somewhere.

Do those PA speakers have tophats in the bottom of them? (A pole mount so you can put them on a speaker pole)

If so, buy a pair of speaker wall mounts from Carvin and mount them on each side of the closet and aim them out into the room.
**Make sure that you have them securely mounted into the studs if you do this**

Move those plastic catch-all containers in that corner into the closet. Basically, move anything that isn't musical out of the room.

You can make a "frame" to cover up the opening of the closet using 2"x2"'s and use 2" L-brackets on the corners. Glue and screw it together - if you need help - ask around, if one of your friends is a carpenter, he can probably put this thing together for you in under an hour.

Hit up Wally World's fabric department, and get some kind of Fabric that compliments the paint color (ask your wife - women , I don't care who they are, have a better eye for this. Or, if you go with Tan or sand color walls, gt some kind of brown fabric - those will match together well) and buy enough of that to stretch over the frame. You'll need a hand staple gun like you would use to put up insulation with. Basically you are just making a kind of "screen" to cover up the front of the closet so people don't see in it. It will just help the room look better.

Hope those help.

The key really IS using what you've got, and have fun!

Hey matt,
I did some of things the guys have suggested do here to my studio. What an amazing difference. I bit the bullet and put on ebay stuff that I hadn't used in years and just threw out some trash that I always thought I might need someday but hadn't used yet. While it hurt like hell to part with alot of these things that in some cases I'd save years to get, my room is so much nicer to work in and I've used the extra cash to buy more mics. I know it's hard but you will glad you've done it.
