I recently bought a 4-channel reel to reel tape deck. I want to make it as flexible as I can so I want to connect it to a matrix switch that I will then hook up to my DAW. I'm mostly interested in playback but being able to record would be nice too.

The connectors on the deck are all RCA 1/8" type.

I've seen lots of switchers on ebay that have "Block Connections" for the audio along with many units with BNC style connectors.

Are these non-RCA style units worth considering or should I shy away from them and continue looking for units with RCA connectors?

What issues would I face with a non-RCA unit?

Well I guess I will partially answer my own question. "Block Connections" appear to be more correctly titled "Proprietary Connections". The manufacturer (if they still exist) sells the connectors for these blocks at exorbitant prices.

For example amphenol might sell a 5-pin connector for $1.92 (quantity 5) in the Allied catalog. The "same" connector from Extron is $23.92.

Note that the Amphenol connector is different enough to NOT fit in the Extron box. So one is forced to buy the Extron part.

I'm still researching the BNC connectors.
