Well, after about 3 weeks, mp3.com finally got my song up. The song is called For This Season and its my latest recording. I played and recorded everything myself (only took me about 75 takes to get the drums). I'm really pretty happy with this one overall, but I think the bass could use some work and as always the drums could be tighter. There are some vocals at the end of the song, if you're patient. This song is an example of whats happened to my brain after 4 years of engineering school....

I'd really appreciate any comments any of you have on the song or the recording/mix. Thanks for your time.

I'll take a stab....

First thing I noticed, is that the drums could be tighter. I do like the sound for the most part. Unfortunately, it is somewhat obvious that the instruments were not played at the same time. You are correct with the bass. I could barely hear it at all....unless what I'm hearing is the bass, but it sounds like low end guitar. And I really hate to be an ass, but the vocals are pretty flat. Not soundwise, but pitchwise. I'm really picky about stuff like that though. It's an interesting tune nonetheless. Um, last comment, in the beginning the instrument parts are cluttered. It doesn't sound like "playing" but "looping". I hate to come down on music, but I am horrible at it. I am convinced that me and my brother will be the two old guys in the muppets that bitch about everything when we get up there. Lol. Keep working with the sound though. I think the song itself has potential.

Take it easy,
Mike

I liked the tune alot. (For This Season) I'll definitely check out the rest.
The positioning of the vocal was very "Yes".
Beautifully grungy chord at ~1:34.
I thought the opposing line at the very beginning which comes in at ~0:35 needs to stand out more.
Either louder or with a tone that cuts through the mix better.

I felt very at home with the mathematical aspects of the piece. My last band was 40% physicists. :)

I dug it. I'll just echo your qualifiers, drums need to be tighter, tryin to feel the math. The bass needs work, doesn't really sound like a bass. The thing I like about math rock, progressive rock, whatever, is that you have to participate in listening to it. COOL!

Thanks a lot for the comments. The bass I used was an old danelectro with lipstick pickups played through my rivera guitar amp and miced (that should explain the sound). I usually run direct, but some of the weird rattles and stuff on the bass seem to show up a lot then. I might try redoing it, doing both (mic and direct) and mixing them together. Anyway, I don't have any great excuses for the drums, except that I've only been playing for two years. So, thanks again.
