I have just buy wavelabs but I don't now very well how I can have a good (like a CD) quality...
I've some problem with the drum's hit hat...it's so loud...and sometime the volum decrease...
someone can help me?

OK guys... what do you reckon to this one?

I'd like to help but my current level of expertise would probably lead me to incorrectly diagnosing the problem and therefore coming up with the correct sollution.

However, I'll try to help and hopefully someone will step in and correct me.

Our new friend says that the hi-hat sound is too loud and that sometimes the volume decreases. Is this a bad recording? I can't see how it can be to be honest... you set up the mic and then it would then be a question of dynamics (how hard the hi-hat is hit). If it is dynamics then why would we want to change this during mastering?

If we still wanted to change this in mastering then would the answer be a multiband compressor? Home in on the hi-hat frequency on compress that to tone down the dynamics?

Personally I don't think it's workable but I'll be interested to hear what others think...

Well, in my opinion if the high hat is the only offending thing on the recording, this thread should be titled "Mixing" or maybe even "Tracking", but not "Mastering"

;)

I don't know, perhaps this isn't your song and you only have a stereo file....

What's the deal?

Supposing your insight is on target...I'm thinking the problem goes back to the tracking stage. If the high hat is to hot, it needs to be better balanced during the recording session.

I guess I'd like to know more about his micing techniques. When ever I run into problems like this, I go back to the basics. Snare, OH and kick. Get this to sound good first.

At this point it's hard to tell what the problem is. Could be he's got phasing problems and one mic close to the hi-hats.???? More info please :)

Yup - See if the client will go for a remix. If not, you can "band-aid" it with a maul-the-band compressor or perhaps a de-essing plug (SpitFish is nice).

Maul-the-band... :D ...first time I've heard that one...LMAO...thanks!
