Mastering while mixing?

Here's a guy who claims to pre-master records while mixing to save time and money and all that stuff. I'd figure that with his experience, he wouldn't claim to do both at once. It cheapens his whole pitch. What do you all think?

i do something similar in samplitude....i'll mix the track then samplitude has masterbus inserts....i'll insert eq and limiting on the master bus....far cry from 'real' mastering but it gets my levels up their...
 
i've done the same thing under nuendo 2.1 before.. yesterday my cousin called himself doing the same thing with a L2 an ozone 3 on while mixing
 
Slapping some compression on the two buss is how many guys mix these days.

Ken puts an L2 and some other stuff on the mix buss. I've heard the stuff that he's done himself and it sounds damn good. If you are recording with ken in a real studio he will not fuck too much with the mix buss. He's just saving his clients time and money.

Before anyone disses this guy for putting stuff on the mix buss, check out his work.
 
my cousin said using the L2 and ozone helps him get levels easy. then he terns them off, eq's and terns them back on to see how it sounds.. he usually has some clean mixes.. i'ma test it
 
Please don't misunderstand my comments as a diss. I've never listened to his work with "his work" in mind, but I'm sure it's fantastic. I'm just curious why he would market himself this way when anyone who knows anything about anything would know that "mastering while you mix" is so easy to misunderstand as bullshit.
 
I think he's assuming that most bands he would be recording do not understand that mastering while mixing is gererally a no-no.



there's a "demo" of something he's recorded.
 
I'll strap stuff across the main outs, but only for stuff I know isn't going much further than my CD burner. Demos that aren't going to see the light of a mastering house. Sure, why not? Makes the client happy to hear test mixes that don't make them want to reach for the volume knob.

BUT!!!

I don't use it to fix mixing problems. The mix is right first, then I compress a little and limit to squeeze a little more volume out of it for the car stereo. If the project has no hope of being mastered by anyone else, why not?

The "Mastering" that is typically discussed here, may very well be done during mixdown. There is no reason not, to really, assuming that you have the equipment / processing power. That "mastering" is mostly a matter of making your mix sound louder.

The *Mastering* that is done by professional mastering houses can obviously NOT be done during mixdown. With the top projects he has been working on, he surely did not master it while he mixed it. In fact, I'm sure he didn't because if he did he would have said so. :)

However, he probably assumes that the stuff he'll get through the website will not be good enough to warrant full blown professional mastering. His 'loudness maximizing' and general mixing skills will be enough. And he would probably be right. :)
 
Sounds good. It just seemed like a pretty unprofessional thing to say. I'm quite aware of what he's actually doing.
 
i agree....anyone with the money to back what their doing will get a quality product but if your just doing a home recording for demos and stuff and expect him to do a mix/pre master then you'll get the stamp of having a professional do something on your songs....nothing too important but enough to say he did something. you can use a wave editor and do same thing at home. but of course if i didnt have a computer...i'd think about it
