i have everything recorded, and im getting ready to master...

what are the volume levels supposed to be?

Wow, what a broad question....! It's like: I have bought a mic, how do Irecord?

I assume you have mixed all the tracks and you now have a two track file?

You now can apply EQ'ing and (multiband)compression on your master to make your mix sound as punchy as you want, and to give it a good frequency balance so it survives on different sysems.

Depending on the end voluime, keep in ind that it's not the peaks in your volume that gives the impression of loudness, but your overall volume. If you want to boast it without clipping, you gotta start working with that compressor.

There are wars fought on this board over how loud masters should be, and it's all a matter of taste and style. Just remember that often small systems can't cope with a constant loudness that is above -1dBv

im definitely a beginner...

i'm supposed to have a 2-track mix?

I'm almost confused -

Are you sending it out or self-mastering?

You have recorded a song I presume?

Have you mixed it allready? In what program?

no i haven't mixed or mastered it yet. i just wanted to know how loud it should be, before i start doing anything.

and i will be using acid.

Is it a ballad, rocker, punk, rap, R&B, etc?

Not to be facetious, but anywhere between -14 and -6 rms on the dBFS scale is finished product. Anything less for mixes depending on how hot your gonna go on the final.

I have to disagree with TrackRat, the settings is 47........

Maybe you should try mushrooms instead?

You should really do some searches and ask some more detailed questions.

But regarding volume, I can say for now: leave enough headroom for mastering.

Let's see you go to 48! I dare ya! Come on punk...............

Oh my goodness Toto!

Quick & dirty - You don't want to clip your mixes. You don't want to tdo anything to the buss for the sake of volume alone.

THEN, wait several days before mastering. Don't listen to your mixes during those several days. Trust me on this.

After that is the big mystery - Every song will need what it needs, and there's no way to tell without hearing it as objectively as possible, on the best monitors you can muster up. As far as the final levels go, I try never to cross the -0.4dB line.

Or, do I still not quite understand the question...?

Fine then. But I've heard that you can break the volume knob in that range.
