Mastering in VS-1880

I bought a Roland VS-1880 a while ago, and I am very pleased.

I wondered if anyone have some tips about mixing/mastering, and would take the time to explain shortly what to do from the "recording is done "- fase, to "cd complete"- fase. Especially, how do get a descent volume level.

I've got one of those guys but I don't master inside it - I transport stuff over to Sonar3 track by track. It can probably be don though I think it has some pretty good tools.

Do you have the 2 optional effects cards for mastering?

I am also getting to the point where I am ready to create Master CD's and am finding that the CD recorded output is very "flat" and the volume level is very low. I have the two effects boards which contain the mastering tools, but need some advice on how to use them - I guess that some compression is required...

Any advice.. ?

Honestly the fx processors in the Roland aren't up to snuff for doing any real mastering work. You could give it a whirl but I don't anticipate it sounding very great.

Personally I like to master on a computer. I hate recording to one, but mixing and mastering I am using the computer now.

My guess, and this is only a guess is that you have neither the gear, the room, the speakers nor the the experience to be worried a whole lot about "Mastering". If it's volume you're concerned with, try a limiter to tame the peaks with just a little gain reduction 2-3db tops.

IMHO, you definitely SHOULD try to start with the 'mastering' yourself. Only that way you'll learn to use the MTK in the best way (and I don't often use it for DIYS-mastering). You should not expect your results to compare with 'pro' mastering. You can nevertheless get your songs louder (if they are too low) and correct some EQ...


Once you've learned to use it, you can have an impression of how some mastering might let your songs sound. The 'mastered' stufrf itself tends to be a little grainy. Start with a preset like pop mix and play (and compare to the other presets). I did some of my latest scratch song competely on the VS, simply as it is faster than doing the rest...
