Well, we're almost there. I've seen a lot of side banter, but no real thread for this question. We've almost got the raw tracks done, and assuming I like the first pass on a couple of songs, looks like Littledog will be doing the mixing. So- I'm going to need a mastering house. Like every other cheap/broke S.O.B. on this board, I want Al Schmidt for $50/hr, but I don't think it's going to happen. I could probably go for $1000-$2000 for good mastering.
The other question is, is anybody on this board a really good mastering engineer? Most folks here seem to mostly be tracking people, as you would expect in home rec. Just don't tell me I have to send my recordings to Father Time and Sweetnubs!-Richie

I respectfully submit my services.

Thanks for the link, I had seen your name (every bit as imaginative as your company name- sorry it was too easy). Rest assured we will chat, because almost any homerec'er will get a shot, if he has the credentials. BTW, can you send me a link for a complete gear list. You've listed Crane and T.C. Electronics, which is a good place to start. I'll take it off line, so you don't get accused of spamming. We'll be looking at several firms, and one big time old connection in L.A.-Richie

if you want to stay local (so you can be present at the mastering session) and $500 or so isn't outside your budget ($85/hr) I can recommend someone who does excellent work in Jamaica Plain.

sterling sound offers mastering that's geared more towards indies. i think it's about 1200 bucks.......i don't remember for sure.

i haven't used them. i just ran across it while looking for mastering for a project i was going to be doing with my record label.

here's the link

Mountainmirrors, we really should talk. You're in my neck of the woods. What do you play, and what do you record? PM me. I have a bias toward psychedelic influences, heavy on Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe, Saloom, Sinclair, and the Mother Bear, It's a Beautiful Day, and yes, even the Mothers of Invention.-Richie
BTW- Thanks for the link. I'm on it.

Hey Rich!
I've got a website at http://www.mountainmirrors.com . I have very similar influences!

Those tunes, I mastered. But I'm going to JP for my forthcoming Mountain Mirrors LP.

Email Dave Locke and ask for the "local artist mail-in rate". He is the man!!

If you have any doubts this guy is awesome (and you won't believe the rates) check out:

Later,

Jeff

(p.s. my email addy is on my website)

Sweetnubbs was one of the great characters of this board!

Mountain mirrors!

David Locke was exactly who I was referring to when I told Richie to contact me about $85/hr mastering. He's been doing the majority of my stuff for years, dating back to when he was at 9 West.

I was a little reluctant to just come out an d say his name, because I wasn't sure it would be taken as Spam. But yeah, JP Masters is a great resource.

Sweetnubs is gone? What happened?

Father Time I never knew...

Thanks for the general vote of confidence, Of course you know Father Time (FT for short), aka Reformed Comic, Bubinski, and probably another half dozen handles for a self absorbed troll with delusions of talent and nothing to contribute. Sweetnubs is a rigid, self appointed expert whose primary mission seems to be to tell people what they can't do, either because they lack his spif gear or his golden ears. In the end, they're both self absorbed trolls with different management styles. Of course, there is a difference, Sweetnubs appears to know something about recording, but the mission is the same- build your castle by making someone else's smaller. I put them on the same ignore list.-Richie

Damn! After your critique of my "uncreative" username I was gonna change it to Sweetnubs!:)

Dont let the price fool ya, I think you will be in shock when you see what I can do.

The real difference is that, most of the time, nubs tells it like it is . . . without as much regard for niceties and political correctness.

The end result is that he passes along a wealth of knowlege and good advice, provided your skin is thick enough to take it without getting bent out of shape. :D

"Magic mastering" -- you mean you'll hype the highs and make the recording sound thin and small like your MP3 clips?

Dude -- seriously -- a mastering guy you're not....
