Mastering for Vinyl

I was hoping someone could give me some specifics such as good RMS levels for vinyl, ball park low frequency roll off or attenuation (I've read that too much bass equals low volume when pressed), and advice on dealing with hi frequencies (I read that distortion and even stylus jumping can be caused by poorly managed his) :( Any advice or links would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

luckily, people that listen to vinyl know how to use the volume knob on their recievers! get your mix sounding as good as possible and don't bother doing any limiting on the final mix. a vinyl mastering engineer needs to apply the riaa curve which cuts the bass, which is what can make the needle pop out of the groove. high frequencies will be fine as long as they have a good cartridge and the record isn't too hot.
you can't really do vinyl mastering yourself since they also make the plate.

Ditto - Get the mix sounding good, don't do any goofy stereo stuff in the low end, and send it off to a vinyl mastering specialist.

Thanks for the quick reply. okay, so no limiter in the mastering chain: Check.
No goofy stereo stuff in low end: Check. Any other tips?

P.s. John, can you recommend a specialist?

Talk to your vinyl engineer - they'll tell you what they need/expect.

I recommend Paul Gold @ 718-788-5777.

Hopefully today - we were two versions behind on software updates and it's been a massive undertaking, so instead of risking the loss of all new posts, we just pulled it down.

Be back better than ever soon...
