Mastering Demo....

Thanks for all that hard work. I'll have to give it a listen with the better monitoring system. It might be easier to follow if you used WinRar or WinZip to compress an archive of individual .mp3s instead of that single monster file....

That way I could load them up side by side in Vegas and do some A/B listening/waveform viewing.

I thought about making all the induvidual tracks available doc, but, part of mastering is showing off the transition between songs. On this demo, I use a lot of cross fades from song to song to show how well it can be done.

I will be working on another one where I will string together a bunch of un eq'ed and uncompressed songs, then do the same thing with eq'ed and compressed songs, the same songs that is, to show how different songs together can be made to have similar percieved volume and tonal characteristics. This Demo was thrown together pretty fast to give to another studio who wants to throw some clients my way for mastering services.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback.

Yeah- those transitions were pretty smooth- but that could be demonstrated with a few more short .mp3s and maybe a vocal walk-through like a college lecture as a background track between cuts.

Agreed doc. Originally, that was the plan.

But after running a lot of these ideas past the studio owner who I mainly made this demo for, he didn't feel a lot that stuff would be neccesary. More or less, he felt the clients just want to here a quicky thing to show what can be done.

Next demo though will be really cool.... :)

Cool Ed ... I can't wait to hear it ... oh yeah ... guess I have to! :)
This is a couple hour download for me, at least ... yikes ... so I can't do it tonight ... but I'll get it as soon as I can. Thanks for sharing.

This is off topic, but ... how did you record the bass and trumpet in Neopolitan? And is that a real Rhodes or a synth? This tune continues to blow me away.

I didn't record the Porterhouse stuff. I just mixed and mastered it. But, I did help come up with the drum sounds to tape mostly as I WAS there when they started the drum sessions and made some changes to a few things. The guy that did record them is a person I work with on projects a lot, so we use very similar recording techniques.

The Bass was mic'ed with a C-1000S on a Harte 4X10 cabinet turned down really low. It was also DI'ed directly from the head with the Eq engaged.

The trumpet a 4033 going through an ART MP.

The Rhodes is real, as it all the instruments. Out of 9 songs, we only used a fake kick drum on about 3 of the songs from a D-4. Other then that, the only other unreal thing is a few analog synth path's, but those are obvious.

Yeah, the Porterhouse stuff is like ear candy for musicians probably due to the fact there is no singer on it messing everything up! :) If you are interested in purchasing the CD, go to www.porterhousefunk.com to order it.

Buy the way BK, there is a before and after of just like 2 mins of 1 song you can download. Only about 4MB total, but, at 128kbs..... :)

Thanks for the info and the link ... I will for sure be buying this CD ... These boys are quite funky.
I'm gonna have to look into getting a 4033 soon ... my C3000 makes trumpet sound way too shrill for my taste. I like how the trumpet on this recording is so warm and natural sounding. I'm surprised thats a C1000 on bass ... maybe the mix of that and the DI is what gets it going.
I downloaded your demo CD from work ... much better connection. Even on these cheap 1" IBM Thinkpad speakers ... I can tell the difference. Thanks again for sharing.

Hey BigK, you may even consider a SM-57 for trumpet.

I once used a RE-27 on a Harmon Muted trumpet and got amazing results.

Ed

Oh, by the way. That is not a trumpet!!! I didn't even think about that till just now....it is a Fugel horn.

You will have a REALLY hard time getting ANY trumpet, with ANY mic to sound like a Fugel horn.... :)

Ed

Hah ... that explains a lot! :D
Still nice natural sound, though.

LOL....and you are going to have a hard time finding a "fugel" horn too.... :)

It is a Flugel horn. And I am still not sure if the e goes before the l or not.... :D

Yeah, I really like that solo. I love how you can hear the air when he is blowing. If you listen really close on the .wav file, you can even hear the keys going up and down just a bit....kewl!!!

Ed

I just got my Porterhouse CD ...
This is the best CD I've bought in a long long time. I like every tune that's on it. Also, excellent work on the mixes for these tunes. The production is awesome. This CD inspires me both as a musician and as an engineer. I just wish there were more than 9 cuts.
Thanks again for that link, Ed.
