Hello All
need your advice.
Im currently producing a band whos cd is "conceptual", meaning that the whole
cd is like a continuous story, and between each track there are sound fx and stuff that link one track to the other. Obviously I need the master to play the whole thing without a gap each time the track changes.
Now my big question is, when i send my cd to the mastering house should I
a) send it in as a whole long track and tell them to do the track cues?
b) send in each song individually as well as a stereo tracks of each sound fx
linking bridge ( obviously very well marked and specific to what track they correspond to) ?
c) import all tracks into an editor, do the sound fx bridges and do the track
cues my self and then deliver the whole product spliced into tracks?

I would appreciate any advice thank you

Send each song separately. Mastering uses a single stereo wave file, so there is no need to send effect tracks. That should be done in the mixing part.

You send a single stereo wave file to the masterign studio.

If your confused, you need to call who ever is mastering it, so he can explain it to you.

You totally didn't get my question, but thanks for the reply anyways.

Lol!

I noticed that.

I don't have the answers to your questions. But to ensure that people get what you're asking, and just to be clear, is this right?:

By "FX", you didn't mean "reverbs, delays, etc...". You meant the little sound-effect snippets that will go between songs to join them without having silence in between.

You're well aware how to send a WAV. file to a mastering engineer. What you were asking is how to send a "concept" CD so that you can have song markers while still maintaning "one continuous song" when listening.

In other words, the question is when (if) you burn a master cd-r with 'no gaps' between tracks enabled, does it play seamlessly like you need, (or is it necessary to actually overlap?

Humm.. I just assumed he is doing the master..

(or she'.. sorry :)

RAMI , yes that is exactly what I meant.
I recorded and mixed the project, but Im mastering at a Pro facility.

Call the mastering service on the phone (or visit them if their local) and ask them how they would prefer it. This will give you the opportunity to explain to them one-on-one and with your own voice what it is exactly that you want. There's a good chance that if you don't do that, that you may not get back what you want; not because the mastering service is below par necessaily, but because it's not uncommon for a mastering house to be forced to make assumptions that may not always be the same ones you make; even if it is just a regular CD and not a special case like yours. This is the biggest problem that most DIYers have with pro mastering houses, a lack of communication as to what they want or expect. Explain to them (the engineer who will be doing the work for you, not some phone secretary) not only how you want the track markers to work, but what you're expecting/wanting in the way of sound.

That said, my guess would be that you want to set up the CD you give them just how you want it to wind up; one continuous file with the track markers set up where you want them, accompanied by a proper printed track list indicating the marker elapsed times and noting that it is supposed to be a continuous wave where you do not want redbook gaps set up around the markers.

B) If the interludes are going to have their own start i.d. separate from the songs, I would send them separately. If they are going to be part of a song as an intro, I would pre mix them attached to the song.

I would also be good include a mock up of how you would like cross fades and spacings.

Just having good communication with your ME should prevent any problems.

Going along with Tom --- Individual mixes plus a mock-up of what you want for the completed spacing. That could even be a decent quality MP3 or something so there's no confusion on what it is...
