Mastering and mixdown????? I need help

I record with a MXL mic and record onto my yamaha aw16G and my final peek on my yamaha is just below 0 (no clipping) but when i mixdown to cd and play it it sound real low!?!?!?!?!? Ove done everything i can i dunno y its like this... So i took the tracks into adobe audition to try to raise the volumes... no good just makes it loud and distroded..... so my question is can anyone HELP ME! i want the tracks i records at my new home studio to sound like the tracks i recorded at the studio accros town! They are going on the same cd and dont want people to have to turn speakers up or down for each song :/

That's not a very realistic request. But there are some of us who might be able to help you with your clipping / distortion issue. Maybe help you out on a few other things . . . taking it one step at a time. But don't expect miracles right away.

If this is something that needs urgent attention, then your best bet would be to send it off to a professional mastering house. In the meantime, you can study, read, practice, etc. and brush up on your mixing basics.

You can do the volume boost that you want in Adobe Audition.

Here's the quick and dirty method.

It'll take a few tries to get it right.

Open up your stereo file in the edit view,

Then click on effects/amplitude/hard limiting,

Start with maybe a 2db boost, and set the max output at about -.5db/-2db

After setting the controls, hit okay and the file will process, if you don't like the results hit edit/undo to return the file back to how it was before, if you want to save several versions for comparison, save the file as a different filename after the processing, then re-open the original file again to try it again.

Try it with different boost levels, as well as different look ahead and or release times.

If you are using too much, you'll hear audible pumping/breathing effects in the music.

You can also try some light dynamics processing (compression), before doing the hard limiting, maybe a 2 to 1 ratio, but don't use much makeup gain, (if any), you'll get that with the hard limiting.

You will probably smash the hell out of things for the first few tries, just keep going back to the original version and trying again till you figure it out.
