question -

If I were to send a mixdown track to a 16 track reel, using 8 channels for each side, will this serve any purpose? will it be the same as a 2 track master?

or -

If while tracking, I send the same track to 2 on the reel, doubling it up (say a vocal track), will this add any quality?

(same concept)

I am using a 16 track 1/2" machine running at 15 ips.

Thanks.

I'll answer your question with one of my own.

Do 16 decent looking women turn into two absolute babes if you stood them side by side and got them all to yell at you at the same time, yelling the same thing?

Answer; Quantity does not replace quality. Each of your 16 skinny tracks will still have their limitations of storing less information then 2 big fat tracks could.

Another way to look at it is like this;

If you took 16 pictures of the same thing and each camera was a 2 mega-pixel camera, would their combined visual output combine to be a detailed and noise free as a singular 8 mega-pixel camera shot? ;)

Cheers! :)

yeah.....

thats what I thought.

can't blame me for trying.

thanks.

Those were great comparisons, Ghost. Sorta reminded me of my last 16 girlfriends, LOL!

16 girlfriends, eh? :D

I was thinking of that old star trek episode with Harcourt, (Harry), Mudd and his planet of clones..remember; Norman, coordinate?! and then the ending where he is left with 500 Stella's, his ex wife!

Harcourt Fenton, Have you been drinking again?!

Cheers! :)
