Im confused. Can i send nothing but a cdr burned from my computer to get a cd factory to make regular commercial cds
or does it have to be in some other format then just a cdr?
I know that you can send a dat but I dont own one of those
anymore.
Thanks

For audio CDs, you need to provide a Redbook CD with subcodes (usually from a mastering house), from which they'll create a glass master. They will use the glass master to press from.......

For runs of data CDs, your computer CD-R is fine..... they will simply duplicate it, bit for bit........

Audio CDs must adhere to Redbook standards to be compatible in all CD players....

Data CD's have no such requirement......

and to elaborate on the previous... yes, you can make a CDr on your home computer that will spec to Red Book. Programs such as CD architect by Sonic Foundry excells at allowing you to make the proper coding, etc. There are also other programs, such as Wavelab and others. A duplication facility, such as Diskmasters, Oasis...or some of the smaller, lesser known ones should have no problems with this CDr in which to produce "commercially pressed" CDs.

I'm not so sure about that -- they'd still need a glass master -- BLER off a computer CD-R is not likely to be within the necessary tolerances for Redbook spec or even the duplication machine tolerance spec.

I don't know the ratios that Diskmakers/Oasis gets, but I would bet a high percentage would be from CDr's. If there was a problem[with a particular CDr], I would think (hope) they would let you know(if they ran into problems). Infact they advertise CDr to be an acceptable medium. However, I would guess that DAT is still the leading format for these places. I can understand the unacceptably high error rate, but I think that it IS still possible to create one "at home" within acceptable limits.

The surefire answer would be to contact the duplication facility desired, and ask.

here is a list of the accepted formats at Diskmakers, for instance....

PMCD master (pre-mastered CD)
CD-R master
Digital Audio Tape (DAT)
1610 or 1630 U-matic Tape
DDC
Mini Disc Makers DDP (or exabyte tape)
1/2" or 1/4" Analog Tape
