So, I hope to always be fearful of doing that to my family and in doing so avoid it.

Putting aside the crazy kind of gear hoarding...AFA your "every day" gear, it's not a bad idea to write down all the serial numbers, brand and model...and also approximate value.
Then put that paper aside for safe keeping...that way...god forbid someone else other than you has to sift through it 30 years down the road, they'll have some idea what is what without having to scour eBay for info.
By then…everything you have will be listed under “vintage” gear!!!

Not to mention...it's good to have for insurance reasons.

I have a few lists...I just need to sit down and get them organized.

I've actually got a spreadsheet with all of my equipment listed on it. I have it broken down into: make, model, description, number of tracks, media format, NR, etc., and the price I initially paid for it. Everything from a cable to my TSR-8 are listed in there. I've thought about this scenario a while back and also realize that I need a will drawn up in the not too distant future and may have to specify a good source (such as this forum) to list the equipment for sale, in the event of my eventual demise. If my son takes an interest in this stuff when he gets a little older, I can breath a little easier. If not, that's what the contingency plan is for.

Now that I think about it, it probably wouldn't hurt for me to take photos (if I haven't already) and hyperlink them in the spreadsheet so that someone can click on the model number and know what they would be looking for.

I can't imagine leaving that much equipment for someone to sift through. What's even more sad is the possibility that the guy probably had no family. I have no idea of the scenario, but it's just a possibility that I thought of.

The bad part is that I have so many various hobbies, that I have alot of stuff to organize. Camera equipment, computer equipment, guitar stuff, and the recording stuff. I just need to pick one and stick with it...

Bingo. This is important. I used to gig several nights a week for years. I had special insurance that covered my gear wherever it may be and I had to keep a spread sheet with serial #'s. It also helps for tax purposes if you are running any kind of business with it.

Followup:
The guys gunning the sale said they were going to have a few local companies come in to make a bid on the remainders. I would expect to see the residue of this sale in either one of the local surplus outlets, or scattered on C-List and E-Bay. As of sale close there were still several of the multitracks and the C-format VTR sitting there.
