Does anybody know what is different about this mic compared with the ones that other people sell like Abe's Music? Mars says theirs is exclusive to Mars Music, but they can't tell me what the difference is. Theirs is called a V67-M. Any answers?

I have it from good sources that the Mars Music V67 is identical to all others, apart from the blue color.

Not that is really matters, but the Mars V-67 is actually black, not blue, and after doing a search, it appears that everyone else sells the green/gold ones. Perhaps the color is the only difference. Any other knowledge out there?

well...I just saw the green version at Nashville Used Music, and I thought it looked pretty cheezy looking...kinda like the NT1...and its white plastic look. I was under the impression from everyone that they were supposed to look pretty classy. I thought they looked like cheap model airplane gold plastic, and the black one would be the only one I would consider getting (looks wise). Kinda supprised me, and actually saved me from ordering the green bean out of the catalogs....or ABE music...or whoever. They do seem to be the BBS rave though, don't they?
My wife even agreed with me on this one....ha!!

You know what, I swear I was thinking the same thing about that green one looking a little cheesy. Screw it, I am going to Mars tomorrow to buy a black one.

mixmkr....it wasn't actually make of plastic was it? I am definitely not buying any microphone made of plastic, no matter what it sounds like and no matter how little it costs. I do draw the line somewhere, and plastic is where I draw it.

They LOOK nice...

...and maybe they sound good too. But I was looking at them in MARS, and they are made of very thin-gauge metal. Not the sort of thing you would notice in pictures, but beside a AKGC3000B or an AT4033 they look positively flimsey. No plastic though, I don't think !

Peace,
rick

no...no plastic....just a cheap looking gold plating...maybe? Looks *artificial*....if that helps describe. And the green..just kinda like a wierd color. Now...I did see the new C12...same color scheme, and even though that mic did look MUCH more substantial (with a price up around $4k+), I didn't care for its green a gold either, but at least it didn't look "cheezy."

The V67G gold plating looks a lot like the Lawson gold plating - a little too shiny for my tastes. The green is similar to the British racing car green. At first, I thought the combination looked pretty tacky, but I thought the same thing about the all gold Lawson.

After a while, it grows on you, and clients so far think it's a pretty expensive mic. It takes some getting used to. But it is all metal - it has to be, to reduce the possibility of induced hum and RF pickup. It feels hefty and solid when you pick it up, and it sounds great.

If you don't like the looks, it's easy enough to take the thing apart and spray paint it some other colors - and that shouldn't affect the sound.

yeah...that's it...the gold is toooo shiney....like polished chrome. I can't seem to grasp the idea of taking it apart to paint it...even though a quality job could still be done. Yeah..maybe some red SM57's would look cool on a gig, but it would definately have to look *factory*, as you have to admit...a little bit of good looks can help in the *vibe*...whether consciously or not. I also understand the *wow* factor in a studio trying to make money too. That is still really important, whether as an owner you could care less about the astetics of it or not. Hence...the popularity of all these shockmounts showing up on every condensor mic now. Are they really needed.....well hell no in many instances, but they look damn cool. no one argues that.

The V67 at Mars is supposed to be wired with Magami cable, supposedly exclusive to Mars.

What is Magami cable?

Zeke

All MXL mics are wired internally with Mogami cable. Marshall Electronics (or maybe its parent company or something) is the US importer of Mogami cable, which I'm assuming is how they were able to work the deal to use Mogami in their mics. Mogami is high quality cable, but I doubt it makes a huge difference over whatever other mic manufacturers/importers are using.

Green mic

Mogami cable is made by Mogami. ;) Man, THAT was easy...

I LIKE the green, although I've not seen one in person, I do have this old gold topped green one from like the 60's or something... old piece of junk I guess... I think the its an early AKG, I used it
once when I was like 15 trying to record a song off a video on MTV into a radio shack cassette player, always just been lyingaround since (dont even know where it came from).... probably toss it next time I clean out... I mean, who in the hell would want an old green microphone that was 30 years old and has its own power supply lying around the studio? Someone would think I had a bunch of junk....

Yea,

No doubt. You know the suckers not wired with Mogami cable, pitch it.

Well, I went and bought the black one at Mars last night. It has the word Mogami printed right under V-67 on the mic. Other than that and the color, I am sure it is no different. I tried it out and it seems to sound great, that is really all that matters to me. It is on sale at Mars for $169 and includes a free shockmount. Now that's a good deal.

I bought a black one last week at Mars. The shock mount is the same one that fits the V57. Don't let them tell you they're out of shockmounts for the V67. It's used for both mics. Some of the sales people aren't aware of that.

Funny you say that GraveRocker, I bought mine yesterday and they DID tell me they were out of shockmounts, so I have to go back when they get them in. Thanks for the info.

mxlv-67

I ordered a V-67 from Mars today also... it seems like a good deal with the shockmount and at that price. I wish they had one locally for me to test... but I think everyone seems to be pretty happy with em.... gonna use if for vocals and mic on accoustic guitar...

Interestingly enough, attached in an email I received from Marshall Electronics, claiming there is indeed a difference between the Mars V-67 and the green ones. I am not sure I believe it though. Well, I could not attach the email, but it said there is a "slight sonic difference". I still doubt it.
