Over the week end after many a beers I rolled over to my friends house to have a look at his new messa pre amp! But it didnt matter I didnt even have chance to plug it in! He had a Marshall one set up already! Man it sounds so sweet! I have never heard such nice distortions in my life they are clean and smooth and chunky! Every one needs a marshall pre amp to make their rig complete!
U all gotta sell ur POD pro's and get a Marshall! They seriously rock!
Has any one else played with one???
p.s. I will try and hear the messa nxt week end Im guessin that will only be if the marshall is not pluggin tho!

Marshall makes good equipment. No doubt.
I've used it outdoors many times with good results.

Oh, you think Marshall makes good equipment? Here I am trying to figure out why they dominated rock guitar for the last 30 years, and you know the answer just like that!

By the way, were you playing through the JMP-1?

Hi Charger.
I used several models of Marshall Heads and Cabs from 1974 to 1976, again in 1988 to 1994.

In the 70s, my main heads were two Marshall 1959s,100 watt heads primarly, with six 4x12 cabs. For a time I had another model as a back up but never had to use it. It wasn't a 59 but I don't remember what it was.
The heads were tube and if I remember right were made in the late 60s. Not many extras. Pedals were used.

In the 80s and 90s I used one of the same model heads but it was made in 1972, and two JCM 900 1960A 4x12 slants.

Other times I used Peavy, Ampeg, Fender, smaller Marshall amps and so on.

So,,,
to answer your question, "Do I think Marshall makes good equipment?"
"Fuckin' 'A' I do".

And, "No!!!, I didn't 'answer just like that'".

It took some years of using the equipment, using other brands to form my opinion on what amp & cab I would use outside again and recommend to others.
By the way, I used a Gibson SG with all of them. I liked the sound and stability of highs and lows from the combination.

You shouldn't waste your time trying to figure out something as complicated as why Marshall dominated for thrity years. I recommend you try some older Marshall equipment, or some newer equipment. Judge for yourself.

Like I said, I used Marshall equipment outside most of the time. If I were to go on tour again, I'd use the same brand. It was reliable, stood up to months of heavy use and being moved and set up all over North America. I don't recall any need for repair other than a tube replacement, if even that.
The sound was what I wanted, fat and clean. I play mostly blues and rock so those combinations of heads and cabs fit my taste.

The sounds carried in places like the Daytona 500 raceway, The Tangerine bowl, Rogers Collisum, in canyons, open fields and wooded areas, and other outdoor gigs.

Inside, I use Fender and Music Man Amps with a variety of cabs. Depending on the size of the building.

When you get that domination thingie figured out, lemme know. I'd like to read about it.

MARSHALL RACK MOUNT PRE AMPS ARE THE DOGZ THE SOUND SO SWEET! SO WHAT IZ EVERYONE ELSES OPINION??

I had a jmp for a while, and alot of my friends DID also. It's pretty ok for distortion. You can get the typical marshall sound. Just don't switch it to clean. Oh boy. What a mess. The clean channels really suck.

As for the distortions, I think we mostly grew out of the marshall sound. It is pretty good, but there's always BETTER... Most of my friends switched to mesa boogie, one of them just got a marshall head which sounds better.
The guitarplayer in my band even let go of the mesa boogie, and went for a vintage Orange and Hiwatt. Try convince him to switch back and he'll kill you. Twice.

I wanna hear the messa pre amp! But as I said when I started this thread that what Im goin be playing with nxt week! With any luck!

never cared much for the mid-scooped mesa sounds. Orange sound pretty good but they are terribly loud and theyve got that great retro vibe to them. my favorite would have to be a marshall superlead, i never cared much for the new marshalls such as the jm900 but thats just personal tastes.

Terribly loud. Tell me about it. This dude is playing through this AND a Hiwatt that is just as loud. Wouldn't survive without my earplugs....

Crazy, we are glad you have 'discovered' Marshall amps. You may want to search out some other obscure makers of rock instruments and amps.

Fender
Gibson
Ampeg
Vox
Matchless

Chances are any combination of the above will sound light years better than a POD.

Hi Crazy.

Sorry about the detour up above.

I've messed with a Marsahall Preamp once. It wasn't mine I don't remember what model or anything about it.

When you direct your question to a specific part, like the Marshall Messa Preamp, you'll be slow on getting some responces you are looking for.
Not everyone uses that particular preamp.
Be patient, someone with some experience with one will show up.

Thanks for the response badgas, I should have clarified that I wasn't talking to you, I was talking to the thread originator. I barely even glanced at your response, I was just cracking up at all the !'s and this gosh-wow, ever heard a marshall? attitude. If you thought I was seriosu, than I'm sorry, but I don't think you should take a post like mine so seriously. Any guitar player knows why 9 out of 10 stages are covered with Marshall gear.

IT WAS A JOKE.

In the same vein as Tex's post:

Fender

and once again, no one got it.

Tell me about it. Some of the longest, most detailed responses I have received are to posts that are (at least to me) obvious jokes.

Please accept my apologies, Charger, for my, ummm, burst of enthusiasim...

I guess since I said Marshall makes good stuff, I thought you were wondering where I got my data.

I see my error now.

BTW. I think we've butchered Crazy's thread here.

Ironically, I can't stand Marshall equipment - the only good thing they've made in the last 10 years was the Amp Brake. Everything else falls apart under any kind of gigging stress.

Hey TexRoadkill!!
Well they obviously sound better than the POD as they are what the POD is imatating! :P

Thats why I use a oberhiem with a internal valve! I cant afford to go out buying thing like marshall pre amps every day of the week as I am still a student!

I wish you luck in your musical career, Crazy.
It can be a good life, hope it is for you.

i used to use Marshall amps thru the mid 70's and early 80's. They scream and are about as good as it gets for playing classic rock (probably cause most classic rock was played on marshalls). I quit using marshalls cause they are heavy, they only have one sound, their clean sound ain't that good, and every marshall i've ever had hummed like hell...that loud amp hum...with nothing even plugged into it. To be fair, I only have experiance with the vintage ones...the new ones may be quiet. A big part of the "vintage" marshall sound is humming though. LOL

I have got a tear in my eye today as I know in a few hours my little marshall combo will be no more! :( Some one is coming round to buy it later! But always look on the brighjt side! I will have more money then!
So who knows I might back to using a head again instead of my rack and it may be a marshall!!!!!!!!! :)
