Hey, I'm a newcomer to this forum, though I've been around on the Sonar users' forum for a while and recognise a few names here .. (how you guys going? brushing up on your french and german reading skills? ha ha)

Anyway, I've seen the Marshall Electronics MXL V57M on sale at a pretty cheap price. Before I just sort of assume that at that price they must be crap, thought I'd just see if anybody is usng one or knows anything about them ...

I use one. (My model is the 1006, and the V57M is known to be the same thing) It's not a great mic, but it does happen to be fantastic one one male bari I use it on. Other than that...a pretty average Chinese LDC with average self-noise and average build.

Same for me...I use it occasionally, particularly on one guy that records in my place once in a while. It sounds great on him. Other than that, I don't use it much.

If you can pick it up for $50 or less, do it.

I tend to believe that the crappiness of most of Marshall's mics begins at their top-of-the-line, v69 or v77 I believe, and just works it's way down all the way to their cheapest model. Getting progressively crappier the farther down you go. With maybe one notable exeption (the 603 SDC's).

chessrock knows the trouble i've had with the v67g, i pm'ed him a while back about it. i have found it much better on drum o/h's and toms than anything else. it is not a terribly great vocal mic, for my voice at least. it does take nice to some screaming, though. my biggest beef is the damn shockmounts, ugh. horrible things. if you can get them tight enough to stay, chances are you already stripped out the thing.

I have one. It definitely has the "boom/sizzle" response that seems to be the Chinese LDC signature sound. Exagerated lows, exagerated highs, and tough to EQ. One application where it does a decent job is finger-picked steel string acoustic guitar. I only paid $39, so I don't feel bad about the purchase.

MXL is coming out with a mic called the 2006 if it isn’t out already, that is basically the same mic, but with much better capacitors and hence, a much improved sound. Seems like it is priced under $100 list, so it should cost around the same as the 1006. If I wasn't going to modify the V57 with better caps, I'd just hold off, pay the few extra bucks and get the new 2006. (Just save the $ from about 3 or 4 trips to Micky Ds - besides, your body will thank you for it! ;) ) Call MXL and ask them when it's going to hit the streets, if it hasn't already.
