my guitatarist has just bought a new tsl212 (jcm2000 combo i think).... recording nightmare...it has two differnt speakers in it!!!! anyhow it also has a balanced "recording" output on it... now a while ago just for a laguh we recorded through the (unbalanced) direct out on a bowrrowed valvestate... it was a heeluva lot easier than micing the thing and i was quite impressed with the sound

i know i could go and see what sounded best...but out of curiosity, would you trust the fidelity of this output, or would you mic one o the speakers?

Everyone likes to mic, and I'd have to go with that one too.

BUT

I acually liked the direct out when I had my 900 head. I think I used that more than mic-ing. Very in your face sounding...and NOT fuzzy like a pedal direct.

If you have the tracks record both teh direct and the mic. Sometimes a blended/panned combination is better than either alone. A direct out recording can sound great sometimes until the final mix is played on a car stereo or friends home system, then uh oh...

I have a Marshall valvestate combo and I think the DI out sux for recording. It sounds way to solid state for my taste, but when I mic it with a Shure sm57 I get a much better tube sound out of it.
After all it is supposed to sound like a tube amp.
