Just wondering if anyone else has heard of these guys. They really impress me a lot and i was wondering if anyone here knew any of there tricks to making music sound incredibly good.

Mark Trombino has recorded bands like Jimmy Eat world, knapsack, blink 182, etc.

J. Robins has done bands like Promise ring, jets to brazil, burning airlines (his band), and a ton of others.

What do you guys think about them. I think they rule.

mark trombino is overrated.... he is not that good except for jimmy eat world's "clarity." his blink-182 stuff is shit but then again i think the expression is "no matter how you try to polish a turd it will still end up a turd." i think he just got lucky with clarity because the first jimmy album is not nearly as good sounding (although that might have been what they were going for). haven't heard knapsack.

j robbins however..... oh man oh man he is awesome. he worked on "three hundred" by the stereo which sounds awesome from a technical perspective and includes perfect power pop punk whatever you want to call it songs. that is also because the lead singer of that band has one of THE BEST vocies in the genre (and all of its stupid sub genres). check that album out, i think j robbins just mixed it though and wasnt involved with the tracking.

i also love his jets to brazil work (another great band).

that's my 2 cents on those guys.

Mark Trombino produced the Starting lines album which I really liked, but its one of those albums that I don't respect from a production point of view. Its way too overdone.

Never heard of J Robbins though.

I still wouldnt say that trombino is over-rated. You record me an album like clarity. I doubt you could. I think him and robins are both excellent, althoug robins ears are better i think. Thanks for your imput though, J

i think clarity is an amazing album and i definately could not produce it myself, i just think that that's the exception. his other albums are nowehre even close to the same ballpark as "clarity." i personall think "static prevails" sounds like shit however. i also hate the blink-182 albums but much more for the band, i guess they sound pretty good. the combined talents of spector, brian wilson, and george martin couldnt help blink-182 though.

Ya, i agree that static prevails is kind of ruff sounding, but that was recorded in 96, so thats why. Clarity is amazing. It sounds the most pure. Bleed American is good, but the production is almost too produced. Its not enough natural sounding. Clarity is a masterpiece. As far as blink, i think trombino did the best he could. J Robins seems to be awesome though. He is great at recording and mixing. I'd like to find out some of his tricks.......J

sorry if i'm telling you stuff you already know, but...

j. robbins ran (i think it's now defunct) desoto records with kim coletta, his bandmate from jawbox. desoto (loosely affiliated, i think, with dischord records--maybe just some distribution deals) put out albums by the dismemberment plan, among others. i'm not sure how many production credits robbins got from desoto, but i'm sure it's safe to say his influence was there.

so anyway, just some others you might want to check out.

thanks Wurd, i know that. Desoto was a great label before they called it quits. now shiner and d-plan are breaking/broken up, but oh well. Robins did a lot of the desoto stuff, but thats only a small amount of all the stuff he does. J

if it was the clarity then so be it ...but i have to say i had to buy the j-e-world c.d TWICE....as i wore the first copy out..lol...that was probably one of the best sounding c.d's i have heard in a couple of years.....:D

J robbins did a few Q and not U records...awesome sounds on those.. alot of great sounding records came out of Inner Ear Studios.

Mark Trombino used to be cool when he was rocking out in Drive Like Jehu and not recorded crappy pop-punk bands...
