So I would like to get a cheap but decent drum set so I can work on mic'ing a kit. A pawn shop is selling one of these for real cheap so I was going to ask if you guys have any experience with this kit? Would it be worth the money or should I just save my money.

Yep, I agree with tim, give us a little more info.

I worked in a panwshop for years. After christmas time you'll get a better deal, and cash - in - hand goes a long way. Thoose guys (mainly) work on commision, they're ready for the commision check today, not after you get it out of lay-a-way.

I agree...talk the pawnshop boys down. Most of the shops where I am will sell pretty beat up gear for almost new prices...research the price you'll pay new....

I have a mapex m series with an 8, 10, 12 14 and a 20" kick...with a snare and hardware of course for 650 Canadian...so basically 550ish US...Some would argue but I would generally pay no more tha 75% for used gear...

I went in checked again yesterday to see if they still had it, (they did). It is the Venus Series. I looked the prices up online and I believe that they are around 500 new. I don't expect and amazing kit for this price, but I guess I'm basically asking, would this be a good kit to just work on mic'ing up and occasionally playing for fun? No surprise but the cymbals were god awful but I didn't think the kit itself sounded too bad. So what do you guys think?

Our drummer has a Mapex kit, not sure the model, I think it is Orion or something. But he spent alot on it, it actually sounds pretty sweet, and records pretty nicely for our style (Metalish punk stuff).

I owned a Mapex for years (I can't remember the model series), and I loved it. Just consider investing in some quality cymbals and drum heads, and I think you can most likely get a great sound out of it. Study up on mic techniques for drums and you'll do fine.

How much is it? You said they sold for 500 new, what can you get the used one for?

(you can probally get it for less after christmas)

It was 200 but I was probably going to get at least 2 good cymbals, so they said they would discount stuff.

Very few drum kits cannot be made to sound good recorded. Bearing edges, rims, tuning balance, etc. Heads, tuning, and the drummer make the difference. Fresh, correctly-tuned heads and a drummer that's "balanced" will usually sounds good. Really, really cheap NEW sets are what to look out for, they most likely will be unable to "revive" without spending alot in the process. I'm not personally farmiliar with the Mapex Venus Series, but I have played on a nice, pro Orion Classic set. It sounded, IMHO, a lot like a Peal Masters Custom. So I'm guessing Mapex does know how to make drums....or at least copy from other leading manufacturers!
500 new, 200 used, that's not bad. Of course, it depends what shape the drums are in!
Good Luck.
