It seems when I come to the calkwalk forum all I see is people with problems. I'm just about to buy sonar xl and a motu 2408mk II but I'm having second thoughts. Is the system that problamatic or is it just too darn hard to use??Jim

Well, getting help is the primary reason for the existence of the forum. What value would there be if it was just a bunch of thread like, "isn't SONAR great?" and "what window background are you using in SONAR?" and stuff like that?

If I were you I would also look at the other forums (Cubase, Logic, nTrack, etc.) and see if the ratio of problems is significantly different.

yeah I see your point Al but I dont want to get into something that will be more problems than its worth.Hey another question!!! I have some real nice outboard gear that Im afraid will be of no use if I go computer for mixing like real nice reverbs. How do you guys handle that! Are the plugins that good??

I don't have any nice outboard reverbs, but I go out all the time to my compressors. Some will argue that the extra D/A and A/D is detrimental, but hey, it works fer me!

Another thought on the problem ratio question: think of the ratio of people here with problems vs the number of people not here because all is well with their systems..............

I've found that all the problems and tweaks that I've gone through were well worth it in the end.

Later,

Ya see,I almost dont want to step out of my world!! I ahve VERY nice console, nice understading of my system. Im not a real computer guy so Im afraid of this whole computer thing being too confusing for me. I have the sonar xl program and I've brought it up on my screen.....oh my god....look pretty tuff to me. Im just looking to maintain my sound that I have but make mixing, editing, saving mixes ,recalling mixes eaiser,Jim

jmorris,

I understand your delima. If you want to get Sonar XL and the MOTU 2408, you can still use your outboard gear. Here is what you do:

1) Hook up the MOTU 2408 to your PC and the eight analog I/O to your mixer (You will have to get a converter like the Alesis AI3 if you whant to use more than 8 tracks.)
2) Load Sonar XL to your PC.
3) Record your music from your mixer into your PC.
4) Clean your audio tracks with Sonar or any plug-ins you may have. (Sound Forge is a great tool to use)
5) Assign your tracks to different outputs on the MOTU 2408 and set your volume levels to in Sonar.
6) Mix and add your reverb and other effects once the hit your board.

If you find that you run out of chanels in your MOTU 2408, you can sub group audio tracks in Sonar by assigning them to the same output. You can then premix them in Sonar before the hit your mixer. Mind you that any thing you do on the mixer will affect both audio tracks using the same output. Another thing, once you start stacking audio tracks in Sonar, make sure that the sum of the audio levels do not clip the MOTU 2408. If they do, just bring their individual levels down and bump the fader up for them on the mixer.

Now if you want to stay away from PC recording and want something more simple, I would suggest buying an Alesis HD24. Of course you would not have MIDI sequencing or the same audio tools that are availible in Sonar, but you would have a simple and stable platform to record on. With the HD24, you can always transfer the audio files from the HD24 to you PC via an ethernet connection to edit the sound files, and you can sync the HD24 to your PC via MIDI (MTC/MMC) to use the sequencer in Sonar.

ok fishmed..I think I understand. I presently have 3 adats I record to. Unless I'm incorrect. If I want to go from the console into the adats, then into the motu then into the computer to mix I dont need an a/d converter right..or am I incorrect??Jim

If you already have the ADATs and Sonar XL, I would suggest getting the MOTU 2408. Here is the modification of the plan:

1) Hook your PC to the MOTU 2408 up just like before.
2) Hook the MOTU 2408 to each ADAT using lightpipe.
3) Hook all three ADATs analog I/O to your mixing board.
4) Do not hook the MOTU 2408 analog I/O to anything.

Now you can use the ADATs just as before (assuming you were not connecting them to the mixer using the lightpipes), or you can use then as A/D D/A convertors for the MOTU 2408.

Here is the trick with ADATs:
ADATs can only have one input - Analog or Digital, so when you are playing back tracks from the PC through the MOTU 2408 you have to have the assigned ADAT's input set to digital. That means if you want to record another track, you will have to use another ADAT and set it's input to analog. With two ADATs it can be a juggling act, but having three ADATs will make it more manageable. Remember, with Sonar you can change which ADAT and chanel an audio track is assigned to.

Oh yes, no additional A/D D/A converters are needed, the ADATs will do the job .

I bought Pro Audio 9, then SONAR. I have a DARLA24 card.

No problems whatsoever. I installed Sonar and put the manual in the closet, I have never had a serious problem with either program.
