Trailing Behind Again
I figured you may have played with this before, and I need some help. I have some home movies recorded on compact vhs, and I want to transfer them to my pc and lay a soundtrack to them. I have Sony Vegas 5.0, and that's exactly what it is for. I also have a audio/video capture device, and that's what I need help with. My pc is, well, not the greatest, and I know that I don't have enough memory (only 128, and upgrading is a bitch, it's a compaq), and I really need the best way to hook all this stuff up? Have you done this before, and can you help? Thanks in advance!

all I know about my pc

Since I know you will want to know this to help me out:
Intel® Celeron™ Processor - 1200 MHz (1.2 GHz)
20.0 GB UltraDMA Hard Drive
128MB 133 MHz Sync DRAM, 2 Total DIMM Slots.
I don't know the hard drive speed or any of that, or how to figure that stuff out. Maybe you can tell me how? Is the lack of RAM going to hurt me? I tried to hook this thing up (it goes to a USB 2.0 slot), and when I attempted to capture video, my pc shut down and restarted. Something I did wrong, no doubt....

Manning???

I was hoping you would have visited the board by now! I seriously need your help with this video capture thing. Please respond, even if it's to tell me to get bent!!!

hmm. well firstly let me say off the bat i'm no expert on video capture devices. HOWEVER.
firstly look at the specs on the box or instructions that came
with the video capture device. i'm sure you will see it will definitely need more than 128mb ram. normally listed are minimum resources to run.
please post these specifications back to me.
also vegas will definitely need more memory i'm sure.
also make sure dma is enabled on your hard drives.
also are you saying your video capture device is USB ?
if so do you have any other usb devices connected at the same time ?
i'll try and help you through this but i need the sort of details ive asked for.
also could you look in win control panel for me in device manager
and tell me if you see any warning flags against any devices on your system. thanks ! just bear with me. i'll try and help.

Thanks for getting back to me. As far as what you asked, I'm close to being a computer dummy, so bear with me if I get stupid and ask something most people with two brain cells should know. The capture device was as generic as they came. I bought it in Singapore and it came with only a cd to download the drivers. I don't know what it's requirements are, but you are probably right about the memory needs. I double checked my device manager, and no warning flags. I am running a dvd+-rw through the usb. And now for the part where I look dumb, I have no idea what dma is or how to enable it.

its really difficult without knowing the pc needs of the video capture device.
maybe try the web site of the singapore company ?
no instruction booklet on CD with it ?
to check dma is enabled go into device manager, click on disk drives, generic
(which you probably have), then settings. tell me if dma is ticked.
also could you tell me this. as im concerned about the immediate shutdown you experienced using usb. forgetting the video capture device for a moment.
does the dvdrw work ok through usb WITH NO SHUTDOWN when you are using it ?
thanks.

Yes, everything I connect through the usb works without a hitch. It's a 2.0 port, and rihgt now the only thing connected to it (it's got 4 ports) is the DVD RW drive. I've connected digital cameras and a scanner to it without any problems. I am running XP, and when I installed the capture device drivers, I got the message about the driver not being digitally signed. Could that be a problem, maybe compatibility with XP?

I've tried to look for the XP drivers online at various sites that carry drivers, including drivers.com, who have computer gurus from all over the world who are adept at finding ANYTHING you need driver-wise, and they couldn't find an XP driver for this thing. I may end up scrapping it. If I do, what other means do I have of getting my VHS tapes on to my machine. My camera is SCSI, if that will help. Thanks for taking your valuable time. I'm sorry I was so late getting back to you, but I am in Japan right now, and I was up past midnight my time (I am in the Navy, so I am up at the butt-crack of dawn to go to work), and I just got too tired to stay up.

rokket. some of my family was in the navy years ago .
so i know you guys work hard. you need rest. my wife also had family in it.
just so you know we have great espect for you guys.

anyway - before giving up on this device lets try some things....do you see any brand name on the video capture device ?
if you have a magnifying glass, and can get inside the device (make sure not connected to do this - ie unplugged) you can maybe see some chip names .
might help me chase down some info on it.
also did you see on the cd that came with it any documentation ?
right click on an icon - and look for a *.txt file extension.
sometimes you get text notes on a device. if you find something with a txt extension then a word processor like notepad or word will open it.
normally these are installation help documents.
also let me get this straight. no crashes with other usb devices - right ?
only the video capture device ?

also if you tell me the brand of your camera AND MODEL NUMBER then i can look up the specs. and work out a possible video capture device.
in case this current one wont work or at least send you in the right direction.
but please be carefull on your next purchase. there have been quite a few problems with some vid capture devices in certain computer configs.
make sure you can get your money back by returning it if it dont work.
also - do you have free pci slots in your computer ?
bear with me - video is a fast moving field and at times lots of grey areas exist.
also let me get this straight. are you looking to record a continual video stream to the hard drive ? or just pictures ?
peace.

I am at work right now, but when I get home I will look this up and see what I can find. Thanks for all your help. I am sure I can get this thing figured out. The only thing I can tell you about the camera (it's at home, too) is that it is a Panasonic, and it has a digital still camera setting on it, and the SCSI out. The audio/video out takes a cable that I don't have, but since I AM in Japan, and they are SUPPOSED to be the technology giants (been here 4 years, it seems to be only part true...), I could probably find the right connection. Also, the only spare pci slot I had has the usb port in it. My pc came with only 4 usb slots, and they were 1.2, and not fast enough for the DVD RW, which is why I bought the 2.0. Thanks again. I will post again in about 8 hours or so, and will look for your answer tomorrow. Navy people aren't the only ones who need rest! I will give you what I can on the camera and the capture device. Peace to you, too. And don't worry about being flamed for trying to help people. I guess some folks are just jealous. The information you provide is timely, and most often correct, and the best way around the problems. I, for one, would be very sad if you quit trying to help people because of a few egos...

One last thing, I saw a capture device here, for about $60.00 US, and I think it's better than the one I bought in Singapore. If I can't get mine to work, I do have the option of getting a good one (with manuals and tech support). But since I started this, I want to see what we can come up with before I go spend the money. Thanks again, you have been invaluable to me!

BTW, here is my capture device:

http://www.addon.it/cellvis/lv-v110.PDF

It's a PDF format, so hopefully you have adobe acrobat reader to open it. The model number is LV-V110. I don't know the manufacturer. It comes with Ulead Studio 4.0, and that's the program I used when I attempted the capture and got the shut down.
Peace!

peace.

I am looking to capture just the video stream, and lay a soundtrack to it. I am going to record home vids of my daughter from birth to present (age 3), and use my own songs as a soundtrack. I did this with her pictures through a dvd creater program I have, but I want more than just a slide show. I was going to record the video stream with the soundtrack and import it into the dvd program and combine them both as different chapters. A major undertaking to be sure, but I think the end result will be great. It's for Mom!

i'm sorry. going into a session now of recording songs. then some shut eye.
tomorrow will get back to you. please be patient.
ok - so its real time video. i get it.
pleae bear with me.
peace.

I totally understand, and as I said, I will wait. I'm not going to be starting the meat of it for a little while yet, as I am still in the review stages with all the video I have to mill through to find the good stuff. You do your thing and get your rest. I will check tomorrow, and try to hook up with the SCSI tonight and see if my pc recognizes the camcorder. Good night!

Thanks!!!

That looks like mine. I am not 100% sure of the brand name, but that sounds right! I will download and install it, and see what happens there. I am already registered there.... I didn't find it last time I looked, so apparently I should stay up on these things. Thanks again, and I will check for you tomorrow!

will be talking to some people i know today.
the problem is there are a million and one devices on the market.
and finding the right one is like a huge forest to wade through so please bear with me.

Manning, you are a genious!!!! That driver you sent me did the trick. I uninstalled the capture device, installed that driver, reinstalled, and it's working like a charm! No shut down, captured both video and audio, no hitches! Thanks! I owe you BIG TIME!

Rokket. i'm so happy for you. hope it makes your family happy as well.
i was trying desperately to find a solution for you quickly thinking you might need to get this done for christmas for your family.
for future reference....i did some research here early this morning.
nogatech is basically the CHIP TECHNOLOGY used INSIDE the device.
apparently its a compression technical methodology used by a lot of
devices like you have. eg; i might be wrong - but i think huappage
use the chip as well.
i hope having got the video ok into the pc, that when you bring it into vegas
that you dont have problems as you have such low memory.
my advice would be to check vegas documentation to see the minimum specifications for vegas to run properly.
in summary i'm still a bit concerned that you have enough real memory in your pc.
all the best to you and the navy.
and if you could click my scales perhaps ? i try and help lots of folks best i can, but they seem to forget.
have a happy christmas.
