I read recently that Steve Morse uses a 'piece of foam' under the strings at the headstock to prevent the onset of unwanted feedback. I've never heard of this being done before and interests me since my Tele tends to feedback easily at higher gain settings. Trouble is, he didn't go into any detail as to what kind foam, or how much is used, or exactly where under the strings it goes. Anyone heard of, tried this technique?

sometimes I do that on bass to deaden the extra harmonics and upper tones when recording. It will make the guitar more dead for sure. Probably good for really fast picking but not good for chords and sustaining notes.

but only mutes open strings, anything fretted is higher than the foam

fwiw ... i once saw a poster of Elvis, with a 335 ... and he had foam wedged under the part of the strings that run from the stop-tail to the bridge ... but that is about harmonics and not feedback
