Hey guys... to save some money a couple months ago I constructed my own vertical 2X12 cab (like the mesa vert recto cab). .It's a sealed cabinet and I stuck two Celestion Vintage 30s in there which sound really good.

However, I get this kind of papery hiss like sound on the high end when i'm playing distorted through it. It's not terribly noticeable in the room, but a sound guy pointed it out to me as it became more apparent when micing it thru the PA. I know it's not the speakers because they're new and they sound fine otherwise. I plugged my head (sovtek mig50) into a marshall 4X10 and it sounded sweet so that's not the culprit.

Could it possibly be due to the acoustics on the inside of the cab? I didn't put any kind of insulation in there... the dimensions are 30"x20"x12". It's just gonna be a pain in the butt to open the thing up again.

thanks

Is it completely sealed or ported?

Most cabs have baffling and junk going on inside, but I don't think that is what's making the noise.

Could it be RF??

I really don't know..

Good Luck
Pat

It's completely sealed...maybe i'll try it open back and see if the tone changes favorably...

Impendence Mismatch

It sounds like there could be an impendance mis-match. How do you have your speakers wired? this mis-match can also harm you amp so be careful.

I don't think so...

I've got two 16ohm Celestion vintage 30s in there, wired parallel...which gives me an impedance of 8ohms i believe...

Correct me if I'm wrong?

Did you use 1/2" or 1/4" plywood to mount the speakers? Perhaps stray vibrations from how the speakers are mounted?
I built myself a 2 12" cab modelled on a twin (it was open backed, however). I did use 1/2" plywood throughout, which made it extra heavy. But, after it was "glued and screwed", I didn't get any stray burps or farts from the box.

actually I used 3/4"....maybe not the smartest, but it's my first cab. And yea, she's a heavy moFO.

BUT...I didn't glue the joints. I just screwed the sides into corner braces. I initially bought some caulk for this purpose but didn't think it would be necessary.

could that be causing some not-so-good vibrations..?

If your using a sealed cabinet design, it won"t work properly as an open back cabinet. Is it ported? Did you calculate the port size based on resonant freq? A sealed cabinet should be lined with some type of absorptive material. Usually fibreglass.
Do you hear the hiss even when your not playing, or does it sound like it's coming from cabinet vibrations?

Have you tried it through another cab that has V30s? Could be just hiss. Also, can you post a sample of the hissing sound?
