Making your own cable

I am going to make my own cable for guitar and need to know what I need. I found the bulk Canare on Markertek but their website is rather awful and I don't know what Neutrik or Switchcraft 1/4 connectors to buy. I think somewhere on this page: http://www.markertek.com/MTStore/product.CFM?BaseItem=NP2C is the right ones. But I can't tell what the hell is what. Also, are there any other tools that might behoove me to buy.

Also, some tips and tricks would be appreciated too.

What about heatshrink and rubber stuff that covers the connector to eliminate the popping? What kind of options do I have there?
